Port Lincoln (SA) - Thursday 7 February 2002
Track: Good
Weather: Fine
Rail: Out 1.5 metres from the 1000 to the 700 metres, and 2.0 metres from the 700 to the 270 metres.

RACE 1 – PARNETT MOGAS/SABIS MAIDEN PLATE:

D. Tootell replaced J. Lorensini as the rider of EMERALD BLISS, owing to J. Lorensini suffering a recurrence of a back injury at track work today.

The start of this race was delayed owing to several runners proving difficult to load.

EMERALD BLISS, which had proven to be fractious in the barriers prior to the start, was inspected by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon and passed fit to start.

FLAMBOYANT HERO (C. Lindop) raced greenly in the middle stages, and over the concluding stages showed a tendency to lay in, forcing its rider to stop riding and straighten her mount.

RACE 2 – ALCOHOL GO-EASY CLASS 2 HANDICAP:

B. Vale replaced L. Smith as the rider of BARMAID, owing to L. Smith being injured the previous day at Strathalbyn.

In the vicinity of the 850 metres ECKMEK (W. Kerford) shifted in and away from CARDIAC ARREST (Darren Holland) and as a result bumped SAN QUEEN (H. McKechnie), resulting in that mare becoming unbalanced for a short distance.

RACE 3 – SMOKE-FREE FLYING HANDICAP:

SO MAY IT BE (J. Potter) and SUNESSE (P. Gatt) were slow into stride.

A Veterinary inspection of JUST LOVELY, subsequent to the race, revealed no visible abnormalities.

S. Lovegrove, rider of the 4th Placegetter CRACKLIN’ JACK, was fined $100 under ARR 144 for failing to weigh in.

RACE 4 – ALCOHOL GO-EASY CLASS 5 HANDICAP:

D. Tootell replaced J. Lorensini as the rider of GREY NURSE.

J. Burgess replaced C. Tyler as the rider of RUBICAN, when C. Tyler became indisposed.

B. Vale replaced L. Smith as the rider of MILITARY EDITION.

The start of this event was slightly delayed when a girth was replaced on WALK TALL (B. Claridge).

BLUE WONDER (P. Gatt) was slow to begin.

PURAVALOUR (J. Marks), which was fractious in the barriers prior to the start, reared as the gates were released and as a result lost considerable ground. J. Marks momentarily lost the use of his off-side iron when the horse reared, and in the incident accidentally dropped his whip.

In the vicinity of the 200 metres BILLY’S CHOICE (W. Kerford) shifted in and tightened the tiring WALK TALL (B. Claridge).

RACE 5 – SMOKE-FREE HANDICAP:

S. Lovegrove replaced J. Lorensini as the rider of THRU THE TRAFFIC.

MADAM MERLOT (P. Gatt) was resaddled behind the barriers prior to the start.

GIGA (D. Tootell) was slow to begin.

MADAM MERLOT (P. Gatt) shifted in quickly approaching the finish line.

A Veterinary inspection of GIGA, subsequent to the race, revealed no visible abnormalities.

RACE 6 – ALCOHOL GO-EASY CLASS 4 HANDICAP:

B. Claridge replaced L. Smith as the rider of CHARTIER.

Over the concluding stages STAR AGLOW (J. Burgess) shifted in slightly onto DENHOLM (B. Vale), which in turn shifted in onto COSMIKADO (C. Buchiw).

Subsequent to the race a Veterinary examination of COSMIKADO revealed no visible abnormalities.

RACE 7 – SMOKE-FREE CLASS 2 HANDICAP:

ALL RISE (Darren Holland) and UNSUB (S. Grivell) were slow to begin.

RACE 8 – REG KEMP REAL ESTATE/SABIS MAIDEN PLATE:

W. Kerford replaced L. Smith as the rider of SUN IVOR.

Trainer Mr. K. Drewitt was advised that a warning had been placed on RUDI’S JOY for its unruly behaviour en route to the barrier.

In the vicinity of the 900 metres CHEWBACCA (D. Tootell) shifted in and away from RUDI’S JOY (S. Lovegrove) and as a result became unbalanced and lost some ground.

In the vicinity of the 300 metres CHAUDON (H. McKechnie) shifted in and away from SALTARA (C. Buchiw), which was showing a tendency to lay in and as a result RUDI’S JOY (S. Lovegrove), which was racing behind CHAUDON, had to be steadied for a few strides.

Approaching the 200 metres FLINDERS’ DREAM (C. Lindop), which was racing greenly, shifted in and hampered EXPLETIVE (Darren Holland). Shortly after RUDI’S JOY (S. Lovegrove) shifted out slightly and further hampered EXPLETIVE.

Approaching the winning post AFTER THE FIRE (B. Claridge) shifted out and as a result EXPLETIVE (Darren Holland) was unable to obtain a clear run to the finish line.

SALTARA (C. Buchiw) showed a tendency to lay in over the concluding stages.

Darren Holland was questioned regarding his riding of EXPLETIVE. Darren Holland advised the Stewards that it had been his intention to settle back in the field, and due to the fast pace being set by the leaders he had been able to carry out those instructions. He further advised that after making up ground to the home turn, he felt that it would be asking too much of his mount to shift wide to make his run and that his best chance of winning was to hope for a clear run in the straight. D. Holland explained that after making the home turn awkwardly and being aware of interference on his inside, a run presented itself in the vicinity of the 250 metres. He added that shortly after FLINDERS’ DREAM (C. Lindop), which was racing greenly on his outside, shifted in and hampered EXPLETIVE at the same time as RUDI’S JOY (S. Lovegrove) shifted out slightly. D. Holland said that approaching the finish line AFTER THE FIRE (B. Claridge) shifted out into the path of EXPLETIVE and as a result he was unable to ride his mount out to the line. Stewards noted Darren Holland’s explanations.

Subsequent to the race a Veterinary examination of RUDI’S JOY revealed the filly had suffered a laceration to the near fore leg which required First Aid.
