Track: Good
Weather: Overcast/humid

RACE 1 – SMARTCHOICE SABIS TWO-YEAR-OLD HANDICAP – 1100 metres

ARKELLE (D. Azis) jumped away awkwardly and was reluctant to race in the early stages and tailed the field throughout.

LEGALLY BLOTTO (M. Neilson) was slow to begin.

AKALANA (J. Maund) raced greenly and showed a tendency to lay in throughout the event.

A Veterinary examination of ARKELLE, subsequent to the event, revealed the filly had a minor laceration to the off hind fetlock.

RACE 2 – ALCOHOL GO-EASY / SABIS MAIDEN PLATE (1st Division) – 1100 metres

TALUSE (J. Maund) and MOLLY DOLLY (T. Barras) were slow to begin.

Racing inside the 700 metres ACE A HEARTS (M. Hoppo) and CHAMINDA (S. Lovegrove) brushed together for a short distance.

Racing to the line MOLLY DOLLY (T. Barras), which was showing a tendency to shift in slightly, had to be steadied from the heels of I AM THE MAN (W. Kerford).

RACE 3 – ALCOHOL GO-EASY / SABIS MAIDEN PLATE (2nd Division) – 1100 metres

SANDERS was a late withdrawal at 12.27 p.m. when the gelding was unable to arrive on course in time due to a vehicle breakdown.

BLIGHTY (M. Neilson) and MAPPLE (J. Maund) jumped away awkwardly.

BLIGHTY (M. Neilson) showed a tendency to hang out from the 400 metres until the finish.

RACE 4 – ALCOHOL GO-EASY MAIDEN PLATE – 1400 metres

SOUTHERN TOUCH (J. Potter), BORNEO BEAUTY (J. Burgess) and HILL SEA (J. Maund) were slow to begin.

In the vicinity of the 1200 metres SIMPLY SUAVE (D. Azis) shifted in, resulting in GOLD RUN (C. Tyler) being tightened for galloping room and having to be steadied. D. Azis was reminded of his obligations when shifting ground.

RACE 5 – SMARTCHOICE CLASS 2 HANDICAP – 1600 metres

Stewards questioned D. Tootell into his ride on PRINCE ARCHWAY today. D. Tootell stated that shortly after the start he had elected to take a sit and gain cover in the race as PRINCE ARCHWAY had a tendency to race keenly if in a forward position. In the vicinity of the 800 metres he commenced to ride PRINCE ARCHWAY in a hands and heels manner, but was unable to improve due to the composition of the field, and the fact that no rider had elected to go forward on their mounts. D. Tootell stated that PRINCE ARCHWAY showed a tendency to lay in for the majority of the race, and for this reason he rode the gelding in a hands and heels manner until straightening, when he commenced to use the whip and PRINCE ARCHWAY responded only in a moderate manner. Stewards noted D. Tootell’s explanation.

A Veterinary examination of COMELY KING, subsequent to the event, revealed the gelding had sustained minor lacerations to both hind legs.

RACE 6 – SMARTCHOICE CLASS 4 HANDICAP – 1200 metres

When the gates were released PELIGRO (D. Azis) knuckled over badly, resulting in that rider being dislodged from the gelding. D. Azis was uninjured.

THE KALICI KID (J. Burgess) was held up for a short distance in the vicinity of the 300 metres until the home turn, behind CENTRAL VIC (B. Grimston).

RACE 7 – ALCOHOL GO-EASY HANDICAP – 1500 metres

Upon jumping away CAVALLI VELOCI (H. McKechnie) and DASHING DANCER (D. Azis) knuckled over.

In the vicinity of the 1200 metres CAVALLI VELOCI (H. McKechnie) shifted in onto ASSASSIN (C. Lindop), who in turn shifted in slightly onto AROUND THE RING (J. Potter), resulting in that gelding being tightened and having to be eased. H. McKechnie was advised of her obligations.

RACE 8 – SMOKE-FREE CHALLENGE 2002 (Heat 8) – 1200 metres

Mr. B. W. Searle, Trainer of POWER FROM PORT, was advised a warning had been placed on the gelding in relation to its reluctance to enter the barriers.

RACE 9 - SMOKE-FREE CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 1200 metres

FREE MARKET (R. Faehr) jumped away awkwardly.

Shortly after the start FEAR REIGN (B. Vale) shifted out slightly onto MARSCAY EARL (C. Lever), who in turn shifted out onto OUR VIV’S CHOICE (J. Burgess). At the same time PURE CLASS (J. Potter) shifted in slightly, resulting in FREE MARKET (R. Faehr), which was racing between PURE CLASS and OUR VIV’S CHOICE, being tightened for galloping room and forced to lose its position.

Racing inside the 1100 metres KIRKALA (S. Lovegrove) shifted out slightly onto LADY OF THE HOUSE (M. Neilson), making contact with that mare. At the same time ON THE CANAL (D. Azis) shifted in onto STAR OF OAKBANK (C. Lindop), hampering that mare and taking it in onto LADY OF THE HOUSE.

As a result, LADY OF THE HOUSE was tightened for galloping room and forced to check and lose its position. D. Azis was advised by Stewards that although not entirely responsible for the incident, under similar circumstances he would be required to give riders on his inside the room to which they are entitled.

SALTARA (A. Stead) showed a tendency to lay in under pressure in the straight and as a result proved difficult to ride over the concluding stages.
