RACE 1 – HIGGINSON’S NEWSAGENCY/EGAN’S MENSLAND/SABIS MAIDEN PLATE – 1100 metres:

The start was delayed several minutes due to the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon late arrival on course.

MISTY ENCOUNTER (NZ) (M. Hagley) and POWERFUL MAN (NZ) (S. Harrison) were slow to begin.

STRIDING (J. Maund) dipped at the start and as a result lost some ground.

In the vicinity of the 900 metres PASTORAL LADY (C. Puls), which was racing greenly, shifted out and hampered MIL LEL (C. Lindop). Shortly after BENARDO (C. Bryant) shifted in and as a result MIL LEL, which was showing a tendency to race greenly, had to be steadied for a few strides. C. Bryant was reminded of his obligations when shifting ground.

Over the concluding stages SIR MAVARICK (J. Lorensini) shifted in and as a result MIL LEL (C. Lindop) had to be steadied.

Following the running of the race J. Lorensini was examined by the Club’s Medical Officers who declared him unfit to ride for the remainder of the day.

RACE 2 – ANN’S DELI/WESFARMERS CLASS 4 HANDICAP – 1300 metres:

FLEET DAPPER (C. Lindop) slipped at the start and as a result lost some ground.

SHARE THE GLORY (J. Potter) jumped awkwardly.

FLEET DAPPER (C. Lindop) showed a tendency to over-race in the middle stages.

RACE 3 – CATERPILLAR / SABIS 2 Y & UP MAIDEN PLATE – 1400 metres:

HOT ISLE (J. Maund) jumped in at the start, at the same time as CHEVALAE (S. Harrison) jumped out. As a result, TUMBREL (J. Potter), which was inside HOT ISLE, was hampered for a few strides and TRESPASSERS WILL (B. Blacker), which was outside CHEVALAE, was severely inconvenienced and lost considerable ground.

CHANGE THE STYLE (C. Lindop) and ALANCIA (B. Neville) bumped at the start.

In the vicinity of the 200 metres CHEVALAE (S. Harrison) shifted in and brushed TASHILADO (M. Neilson) and as a result that filly was then held up for a short time when racing on the heels of JEFFERSON (K. Post).

In the vicinity of the 50 metres K. Post (JEFFERSEON) accidentally struck CHEVALAE (S. Harrison) over the head with his whip.

CHANGE THE STYLE (C. Lindop) was held up for a clear run over the concluding stages.

RACE 4 – WESTERN UNITED INSURANCE BROKERS CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 1600 metres:

In the vicinity of the 1400 metres MIKAJA (J. Potter) shifted in and away from TASTE THE SPIRIT (C. Bryant) and as a result hampered KEEP IT REGAL (M. Hagley), which in turn shifted in and hampered DANNICK (C. Puls).

In the vicinity of the 1300 metres DELETE ME NOT (B. Neville) shifted in and as a result COMELY KING (M. Hoppo) was taken in for a short distance, resulting in TASTE THE SPIRIT (C. Bryant), MIKAJA (J. Potter), KEEP IT REGAL (M. Hagley) and DANNICK (C. Puls) all being hampered for a short distance. B. Neville was reminded of his obligations in giving riders on his inside the room to which they are entitled.

Trainer Mr. V. Bradley and Apprentice T. Barras were questioned regarding the apparent poor performance of MISS RAFFERTY. T. Barras advised the Stewards that at no stage during the race did MISS RAFFERTY ever travel comfortably and when he asked the filly for an effort in the vicinity of the 800 metres, she failed to respond to his riding. Mr. V. Bradley stated that he was disappointed with the performance of MISS RAFFERTY, as the filly had worked well leading into the race. He advised the Stewards that it was his intention to school MISS RAFFERTY and to run the filly over a distance of approximately 2000 metres at its next start. A Veterinary inspection of MISS RAFFERTY revealed no visible abnormalities.

RACE 5 – BEACHPORT TRAWL FISHERIES FLYING HANDICAP – 1100 metres:

Correct Weight was delayed to allow G. Hoobin, rider of the 3rd Placegetter SANGHA RIVER, to view the Official head-on film over the final 200 metres. After doing so, in conjunction with Stewards, Correct Weight was declared.

RACE 6 – ELDERS VP CLASS 2 HANDICAP – 1100 metres:

KID DAPPER was fractious in the barriers. Mr. R. Wilson, Trainer of KID DAPPER, was advised a warning had been placed on the gelding and any further infringement could lead to action being taken against it.

TOP VIEW (D. Mittiga) and MORE MELBOURNE (D. Yendall) bumped at the start.

NORTHERN CASTLE (G. Hoobin) raced wide throughout.

RACE 7 – SOMERSET HOTEL-MOTEL/COOPERS MILLICENT CUP – 1700 metres:

TELL NO LIES (NZ) (D. Mittiga) and MIGHTY EEL (C. Puls) were very slow to begin.

RACE 8 – HOFFMANN TRENCHING/ARGYLE TRANSPORT CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 1300 metres:

SUMMER WIND (D. Mittiga) was held up for a clear run over the concluding stages.
