Mount Gambier (SA) - Wednesday 3 October 2001
Track: Good
Weather: Showery
Rail: Normal

RACE 1 – MACS HOTEL HURDLE

Stewards ordered the withdrawal of TESTONI (NZ) at 8.35 am after the Club’s Secretary advised that a scratching had been advised on the Club’s answering service prior to the scratching deadline.

ABSTAINING TIGER (P. Kelly) jumped awkwardly and lost considerable ground.

ZIPPER DIPPER (P. Creig) was slow to begin.

RACE 2 – SOUTH AUSTRALIAN HOTEL MAIDEN PLATE (Division 1)

MR. SMART GUY (T. Barras) was slow to begin.

DUNGAREES (L. Smith) jumped away awkwardly.

Racing to the 1000 metres SPECTACULAR RUN (NZ) (D. Yendall) had to be eased when racing ungenerously.

Racing from the 900 metres BRANDY SPRINGS (C. Bryant) showed a tendency to lay out and racing to the 800 metres rolled in and brushed TANAMI TORNADO (M. Hagley).

Following the running of this race the Stewards reclassified the track from Good to Dead at 12.45 pm.

LIFT (T. Barras) was slow to begin.

G. O’Loughlin, rider of JESS ‘N’ JAMES, reported that the gelding had shown a tendency to lay out throughout the race.

RACE 4 – COMMERCIAL HOTEL CLASS 3 HANDICAP

GLENORMISTON BRAVE was withdrawn by order of the Stewards at 1.30 pm after confirmed advice that the vehicle carrying the gelding to the course had broken down and would not arrive in time.

A swab sample was taken from GOLDEN WHIRL, unplaced runner in the race.

Racing to the 1200 metres GOLDEN WHIRL (M. Hagley) had to be eased due to WANGOOM WONDER (G. Hoobin) shifting in. G. Hoobin was reminded of his obligations when shifting ground.

Racing to the 1000 metres WINFIELD’S SHADOW (NZ) (C. Bryant) became unbalanced for some distance and lost its position when tightened for galloping room by BISRAAMI (D. Missen) which was showing a tendency to lay away from WANGOOM WONDER (G. Hoobin).

M. Hagley, rider of GOLDEN WHIRL, could offer no real explanation for that gelding’s poor performance today apart from the fact she felt GOLDEN WHIRL was attempting to do its best but failed to respond at any stage to her riding and she was extremely disappointed with the gelding’s effort.

RACE 5 – ROYAL MAIL HOTEL CLASS 2 HANDICAP

SPIRITUAL MISS was withdrawn by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice at 1.35 pm after that mare had injured its back en route to the course.

Stewards ordered the withdrawal of BENTONITE at 1.59 pm acting on a confirmed telephone call that the gelding would not arrive on course by the required time.

C. Lindop replaced S. Dunn as the rider of RORY’S ACE after a confirmed telephone call that Samantha Dunn’s motor vehicle had broken down.

RUNAWAY STARLET (D. Yendall) jumped away awkwardly.

RACE 6 – ELAINE HUTCHESSON FAREWELL CLASS 1 HANDICAP

NORTHERN CASTLE broke through the barrier and after galloping a circuit of the course was recaptured. Stewards ordered the withdrawal of NORTHERN CASTLE at 3.10 pm to prevent any further undue delay. Stewards ruled that all monies wagered on NORTHERN CASTLE be refunded. Bets made prior to the withdrawal were to be paid on the face value of the ticket less:
Bets for a WIN - 10 cents in the dollar from the face value of the ticket, and
Bets for a PLACE - 10 cents in the dollar from the winnings only.

A swab sample was taken from FLEET MASTER, the fourth placegetter.

RACE 7 – NARACOORTE HOTEL / SABIS CLASS 1 HANDICAP

MISS DANGER (J. Burgess) underwent a veterinary inspection at the barrier and was declared fit to start.

Approaching the winning post AQUATIC ARCH (C. Lindop) had to be eased to avoid the heels of PINE MIST (P. Marks).

RACE 8 – FLANAGANS IRISH PUB DISTANCE CLASS 4 HANDICAP

No report.

RACE 9 – FEDERAL HOTEL-MOTEL / SABIS MAIDEN PLATE

Stewards ordered the withdrawal of MIRSEVINI at 5.10 pm after that mare became unruly in the barrier and a subsequent veterinary inspection declared the mare unfit to race. Stewards ruled that all monies wagered on MIRSEVINI be refunded. Bets made prior to the withdrawal were to be paid on the face value of the ticket less:
Bets for a WIN - 6 cents in the dollar from the face value of the ticket, and
Bets for a PLACE - 7 cents in the dollar from the winnings only.

CALIFORNIA ROSE (G. O’Louglin) underwent a veterinary examination at the barrier and was declared fit to start.

RED RONALD (B. Blacker) refused to jump from the barrier and took no part in the race. Mrs. H. Frew, trainer of RED RONALD, was advised that the gelding was now suspended from racing until such time as it can prove to the Stewards in an organised barrier trial that it can jump with the field before being accepted for a race again.

Mr. G. Hancock, trainer of MIRSEVINI, was advised that the mare will have to pass a trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards before being accepted for a race again.

Racing to the 1000 metres AT THE FENCE (P. Marks), which was showing a tendency to lay out throughout the race, inconvenienced CALIFORNIA ROSE (G. O’Loughlin).

Racing to the 400 metres CALIFORNIA ROSE (G. O’Loughlin) rolled in and as a result AT THE FENCE (P. Marks) shifted away from that mare and inconvenienced BOOK OF KINGS (C. Lindop).
