Moonee Valley (VIC) - Thursday 11 April 2002
Track: GOOD
Weather: FINE
Rail:
OUT FIVE METRES FOR THE ENTIRE CIRCUIT

Riding Changes:

Race Horse Rider Replaced By Reason
1 "Lady Garcia" P. Mertens D. Oliver Indisposed

* No other rider available

Race 1 - CC's - YOU CAN'T SAY NO HANDICAP - 1200 metres:

The start of the race was delayed initially to ensure that the emergency back-up generator was working satisfactorily, and then "Lady Garcia" proving difficult to load in the stalls.

Acting on a report from the Starter regarding the unruly behaviour of "Lady Garcia" when being placed in its starting stall, the Stewards notified Mr. Robbie Griffiths, trainer of the filly, that a warning was being placed on it that should it behave in a similar manner in future more severe action may be taken. Mr. Griffiths was further notified that prior to "Lady Garcia" racing again he must produce a barrier test certificate for it.

Prior to correct weight the Stewards viewed the patrol video in the straight. It was established that "Fraar Side" shifted in towards "Lady Garcia" approaching the 100 metres, and that both "Fraar Side" and "Lady Garcia" came together shortly thereafter due to both horses shifting ground slightly.

"Land Lady" jumped away awkwardly, and then shifted in and hampered "Mad Azelle" and "Debcat".

After passing the 800 metres "Land Lady" became unbalanced when being checked off the heels of "Lady Garcia".

The Club's Veterinary Surgeon reported that "Mad Azelle" may have choked down during the running of the race.

Race 2 - CADBURY - WOULDN'T IT BE NICE HANDICAP - 1600 metres:

Prior to correct weight S. King, rider of "Mowgreen (NZ)", fourth placegetter, viewed the Stewards' patrol video and decided not to lodge an objection.

"Phayes Tip" was slow to begin.

Near the 1400 metres "Spare that Tree", when being eased off the heels of "No Alibi", threw its head in the air and raced ungenerously for a short distance.

Near the 1200 metres "Warrior Rose" shifted in and brushed "Vettori Gold".

At the entrance to the straight "Run Mikhail Run" had to be checked over the heels of "Mowgreen (NZ)" when taken out by "Shoota McGavin".

M. Zahra, rider of "She's Archie", was severely reprimanded for shifting out to obtain a run at the entrance to the straight when not clear of "Bernstein", thereby bumping "Bernstein" out on to "Mowgreen (NZ)", resulting in both those horses being hampered.

After passing the 400 metres "Spare that Tree" had to be checked when tightened for room between "Mowgreen (NZ)", which shifted in slightly, and "Run Mikhail Run" (Linda Meech), which shifted out. Linda Meech was notified to exercise more care when shifting ground in future.

Approaching the 100 metres "No Alibi" had to be checked when tightened for room between "Scaler" and "She's Archie" due to both horses shifting ground.

Race 3 - MARS HANDICAP -1000 metres:

"Havana Town (NZ)" had a tendency to lay in throughout the race.

Race 4 - DISMO HANDICAP - 1000 metres:

"Walk on Air" jumped away awkwardly and knuckled, shifted out, and tightened "Hector's Hope" on to "Gentrified (NZ)", resulting in "Hector's Hope"' being hampered and "Gentrified (NZ)" being severely hampered.

"Gentrified (NZ)" hung in when making ground in the straight, and inconvenienced "Hulavie" near the 100 metres.

R. Wheeler, rider of "Hector's Hope", stated that the colt hung out throughout the race, and he believed that something was amiss with it. For this reason he eased it down over the concluding stages. A veterinary examination of "Hector's Hope" failed to reveal any abnormality, and a swab sample was taken from the colt.

Race 5 - M & M's TROPHY - 1600 metres:

N. Callow, rider of "Brodance" which performed below expectations, stated that the gelding did not respond to his riding and, as he believed that something may have been amiss with it, he eased it down in the straight. A veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormality.

A veterinary examination of "Mr. Trickster", which performed below expectations, revealed that the gelding had been galloped on, on the near hind leg.

Race 6 - SOFTEX HANDICAP - 2040 metres:

Running to the post the first time "'Follow the Band" got its head up when being restrained.

Near the 1400 metres "Follow the Band", which was over-racing, shifted in and had to be checked off the heels of "Teerex".

On the home turn "Quencher" was inconvenienced when tightened slightly between "Tezza Raami", which was weakening, and "Shia Khan", which shifted in slightly.

After passing the 800 metres "Follow the Band" had to be checked when tightened for room between "Fillary", which was taken out slightly by "You're Joking" and "Melody Prince" (Michelle Payne), which shifted in under pressure. Michelle Payne was severely reprimanded, and notified that she must exercise far greater care when shifting ground in future.

In the run to the winning post "You're Joking" (Linda Meech) shifted out under pressure and took "Fillary" out, inconveniencing that gelding. Linda Meech was reprimanded, and notified that she must stop riding and straighten her mount when shifting ground in future.

Race 7 - GILLIES COUNTRY BAKERS' HANDICAP - 2040 metres:

"Annette" was slow to begin.

Near the 900 metres "Ansonia (NZ)" was tightened for room by "Self Interest", which shifted in initially, and was then taken in slightly by "Give me`Something". "Annette", which was following, had to be checked when tightened for room by "Superina (NZ)" (Donna Mott), which shifted in to improve its position on the inside of "Misleading", which had to be eased off the heels of "Self Interest". Donna Mott was reprimanded, and notified to exercise more care when shifting ground in future.

"Annette" was held up rounding the home turn.

During the running of the race "Ansonia (NZ)" suffered a bleeding attack.

A veterinary examination of "Self Interest" revealed that the mare was sore behind.

SWAB SAMPLES were taken from the winners of all races tonight, and a swab sample was taken from "Hector's Hope" - Race 4.

FINES/EXPLANATIONS:

Andrew Masters, rider of "Club Girl (NZ)" which ran in the Gillies Country Bakers Handicap, was fined $200 for weighing in one kilogram over his declared weight.
