Gosford (NSW) - Thursday 27 December 2001
Weather: Fine
Track: Good

RACE 1 - EAGLES PLUMBING PLUS MAIDEN HANDICAP (DIV 2) 1200M

Due to transport difficulties J Innes (Pie Eyed) and T Jones (Likely Treasure) did not arrive on course.

D Spriggs replaced J Innes and as no other senior rider was available permission was granted for apprentice C Karakatsanis to replace T Jones.

Likely Treasure was slow to begin.

Goodfella jumped away awkwardly.

Approaching the first turn Tableden Star, which was racing fiercely, had to be checked off the

heels of Goodfella. In the early part of the straight Fossick experienced some difficulty obtaining clear

running. A post race veterinary examination of Pie Eyed revealed the filly to be shin sore. Trainer J

McNair reported that Pie Eyed would now be sent for a spell.

RACE 2 - LUNCH IN THE WINNERS CIRCLE MAIDEN HANDICAP (DIV 1) 1200M

Oblique, which was slow to begin, was bumped shortly after by Casual Story which was taken in by Lifeline Express.

Lucifer's Double hung out rounding the home turn.

When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of Monuments, D Spriggs stated that the horse was slow to begin and despite his endeavours to ride the gelding along at all stages of the race it failed to respond.

Trainer K Gavenlock could offer no tangible explanation for Mounuments' performance and was advised that it must perform competitively to the stewards' satisfaction in an official barrier trial prior being permitted to race again.

When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of Lifeline Express, D Beadman stated that after beginning well his mount travelled well until the 400M where he placed the gelding under pressure but Lifeline Express failed to respond and weakened noticeably in the straight.

Trainer C Conners could offer no excuse for the disappointing performance and said he was confident going into the race as Lifeline Express had worked well leading up to the event. Mr Conners undertook to report on the progress of Lifeline Express in the days subsequent.

RACE 3 - GOSFORD RACE CLUB FUNCTION CENTRE CLASS 3 PLATE 2100M

Zabwin jumped in at the start and hampered Mandalay Bay.

Grand Raj, which raced fiercely in the early and middle stages, was held up rounding the home turn.

When questioned regarding the improved performance of The Builder, trainer N McBurney stated that following the gelding's last start when it overraced and failed to finish that race off, he freshened it up for today's event. He said that in his opinion there was more pace in today's race which suited The Builder and enabled it to finish the race off. He added that the drop in class from last start class 6 to today's class 3 also contributed to the gelding's improved performance.

RACE 4 - COCA-COLA AMATIL MAIDEN HANDICAP 1100M

Zulu Ruler was slow to begin.

Capzoff was checked on jumping when crowded for room between Proud Canadian, which shifted out, and Balgold, which was taken in by Marscay Image.

A short distance after the start Dana's Kingdom had to be steadied off the heels of Cousin Louise when crowded for room by Proud Canadian which shifted in when overracing.

Hula Night hung out making the home turn.

Approaching the 100M Frame Up was hampered when bumped by Balgold which became unbalanced when crowded for room by Mister Dumpty which was taken out by Dana's Kingdom (A Gibbons) which, after being held up from rounding the home turn to that point, shifted to the outside of Levende to obtain clear running. A Gibbons was reprimanded.

RACE 5 - COL ALDRICK 30 YEARS SERVICE CLASS 3 PLATE 1000M

Eartear hung out from the 600M until straightening up.

Rounding the home turn Pride Of Pyrmont hung out and Rhythm Prince hung out badly.

Trainer J McNair reported that Eartear will now be sent for a spell.

RACE 6 - NBN CENTRAL COAST TELEVISION CLASS 6 HANDICAP 1600M

Turaga hung out making the home turn. Passion Palace, which was following, was steadied when awkwardly placed on that horse's heels.

Approaching the 200M Fancy Colours (D Beadman) shifted in under pressure and carried The Moonster (H Bowman) in across the running of Quartey, which lost its running and was checked and carried across the running of National Bid which was also checked and lost ground.

Stewards were of the opinion that D Beadman had shifted in under pressure and H Bowman had taken a run where there was insufficient racing room.

In the circumstances D Beadman was reprimanded and informed that he would be expected to stop riding and straighten his mount in similar circumstances and H Bowman were severely reprimanded and informed that he would be expected to take running where there was sufficient racing room.

RACE 7 - JACK WARD MEMORIAL CLASS 1 HANDICAP 1200M

Danny Dancer was held up in the early part of the straight.

On returning to the enclosure after the race Top Sped Justice collapsed and died.

When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of Call Me Henry, C Munce stated that after being caught wide from an outside barrier his mount failed to show any speed at any stage of the race. He added that in his opinion the weight of 57.5 Kg was also a contributing factor.

A post race veterinary examination of Call Me Henry revealed the gelding to be displaying a poor recovery rate. Mr B Killion, representing trainer G Waterhouse, undertook to report on the progress of Call Me Henry in the days subsequent to the race.

RACE 8 - NEW YEAR'S EVE TWILIGHT GALLOPS CLASS 6 HANDICAP 1200M

Covina was steadied when crowded for room shortly after the start between Shalaal, which shifted out, and Vellour, which shifted in.

Our Survivor had difficulty obtaining clear running rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight.
