Gosford (NSW) - Wednesday 10 April 2002
WEATHER: FINE
TRACK: GOOD

RACE 1 - Kelly's Carpets 2yo Maiden Plate 1100m

If You Say So, which was slow to begin, was crowded shortly after by All D'Right Moves and Mukabhai, both of which shifted ground. A short distance after the start Philadante attempted to buck and then commenced to race fiercely until 600m at which point the gelding had to be checked off the heels of Golden Rory. Trainer B Law was advised that a warning would be placed on the racing manners of Philadante. Madam Allbright was inclined to hang out rounding the home turn. M Manktelow (Ballymara) was reminded of her obligation regarding the use of the whip on a horse out of contention. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of Lion Dancer, D Beasley stated that his mount, which had raced wide throughout, travelled fairly until the home turn at which point he placed the gelding under pressure, however Lion Dancer failed to run on and was disappointing. Trainer R Thomsen was unable to offer any excuse for the performance and undertook to report on the progress of Lion Dancer in the days subsequent to the event. A post race veterinary examination found Lion Dancer to be displaying mild respiratory distress. A post race veterinary examination of Canvass, which weakened in the straight, did not reveal any abnormality.

RACE 2 - One Stop Pine Maiden Plate 1100m

Bletchy, which was slow to begin, was hampered shortly after by Noisy Crew and Vellian, both of which in turn were taken out by Vaporeon. Then making the home turn Bletchy was held up for a short distance and in the early part of the straight experienced some difficulty obtaining clear running. Approaching the home turn Vellian and Leica Cat bumped on a number of occasions. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of Track D Beasley state the filly did not travel at any stage of the race and when placed under pressure in the straight failed to respond to his riding. Trainer P Perry advised that Track will now be sent for a spell. A post race veterinary examination of Track did not reveal any abnormality.

RACE 3 - Beechwood Homes Class 1 & Maiden Plate 2100m

Cannywin, which jumped awkwardly, hung out while racing fiercely making the turn out of the straight resulting in Snow Hawk being taken wider. Regarding the disappointing performance of Hint Of Paradise, D Beasley stated that his mount travelled well to the 800m but whilst under pressure from that point the mare commenced to give ground and in his opinion was very disappointing. A post race veterinary examination of Hint Of Paradise did not reveal any abnormality. Mr B Killion, representing trainer G Waterhouse, was unable to offer any tangible explanation for the poor performance of Hint Of Paradise and undertook to report on the progress of the mare in the days following.

RACE 4 - Erina Sewing Centre Class 6 Handicap 2,100m

Assilem jumped away very awkwardly and lost considerable ground. A post race veterinary examination of Dusky Beau, which was retired from the event, revealed the gelding to have suffered cardiac arrythmia. Trainer G Portelli was advised that before Dusky Beau is permitted to race again he must produce a veterinary certificate of fitness, including the results of an ECG, and the gelding must perform to the satisfaction of the stewards in an official barrier trial.

RACE 5 - H K Epoxy Seal Class 1 & Maiden Plate 1,600m

L Beasley replaced C Munce as the rider of La Boca. C Munce will be interviewed relative to his engagement or otherwise. St. Chandon knuckled on jumping. Snoopy was slow to begin. La Boca, which was held up for a clear run rounding the home turn shifted out and bumped St. Chandon resulting in that runner being taken on to the hindquarters of Priscilla.

Near the 500M Jupaque and Isim bumped resulting in Isim becoming unbalanced. Rounding the home turn Gold Again had to be steadied for some distance when awkwardly placed close to the heels of She Sizzles. On straightening Stormcat Academy shifted out to obtain clear running and bumped Seguista on a number of occasions. Approaching the 200M Seguista (D Spriggs) shifted in under pressure resulting in Earonin being taken in on to Daunting Spirit which had to be steadied. D Spriggs was advised to exercise more care when shifting ground. Earonin hung in badly in the straight resulting in its rider J Innes being unable to fully test the gelding. J Innes accidentally dropped his whip near the 100m. When questioned regarding the performance of Baghdad D Beasley stated that the gelding, which he rode for speed today, travelled well in the early stages, however from about the 600m when Daunting Thought laid in on Baghdad the gelding became unbalanced and failed to run on when placed under pressure from that point. Mr B Killion, representing trainer G Waterhouse, added that Baghdad, which was resuming today, might not have been helped by its big weight. Mr Killion undertook to report to the stewards on the progress of the gelding in the days subsequent. Apprentice R Brewer (Isim) was fined $100 for returning to scale in excess of one kilogram overweight.
