RHYTHM ROYALE (NZ) (R. McKenna) was slow to
jump.
On jumping the obstacle near the 1800
metres STAR GAMES (W. Harnett) was inconvenienced by WINSOME WILLY (J. Wallace), which
shifted out.
S. Pateman, the rider of LANCE CORPORAL,
when questioned regarding an apparent lack of vigour on that gelding between the 600 and
300 metres, stated that he was mindful that LANCE CORPORAL was having its first start in a
hurdle race and had been lightly raced during this preparation. He added that in the
vicinity of the 400 metres he felt confident that he was racing close enough to the
eventual winner and was mindful of conserving his mount in order for it to remain
confident when attempting the final hurdle. S. Pateman admitted, in hindsight, that he may
have erred in not having applied some pressure to the eventual winner inside the 400
metres. After considering this explanation, and taking into account S. Patemans
relative inexperience, he was reprimanded and advised that in similar circumstances in
future he would be expected to show more vigour and initiative.
