RACE 1 – EASYSHIFT HANDICAP - 1000 metres

G. Richards, the trainer of QUANTUM LEAP, which proved difficult to load, was advised that a repetition of that filly’s behaviour may lead to action being taken against it.

BLEVIC’SJEWEL (T. Creek) was slow to jump.

REIGN OF GOLD (P. Marks) jumped away awkwardly.

GUCCI GURU (NZ) (J. Holder) was slow to jump and then shifted out onto the heels of BLEVIC’S JEWEL (T. Creek) and was obliged to steady momentarily.

Near the 600 metres LA PALOMA (B. Vale) was inclined to get its head up and race ungenerously under restraint.

Near the 200 metres SOCIAL GLOW (B. Claridge) shifted in and brushed BELLA VICHY (M. Neilson).

Inside the 200 metres GUCCI GURU (NZ) (J. Holder) shifted in and inconvenienced CHOCKO (J. Potter). LA PALOMA (B. Vale) shifted in and away from GUCCI GURU (NZ).

After entering the straight QUANTUM LEAP (D. Carney) was unable to obtain clear ground. D. Carney confirmed that, due to the positioning of other runners, he had been unable to fully test his mount.

Correct Weight for this event was delayed to permit J. Holder, the rider of GUCCI GURU (NZ), and the filly’s connections the opportunity to view the official footage of the start.

RACE 2 – HI TIDE HANDICAP - 2250 metres

BAITENHAUSEN was withdrawn by Stewards at 10.10 am acting on confirmed advice from the gelding’s trainer, Mr. S. Gower, that it was sore in the off fore hoof.

On arrival at the start, OLONGOPO was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon and ruled fit.

OLONGOPO (M. Hoppo), BELLTON (M. Neilson) and TAWTRICE (P. Gatt) were all slow to jump.

Subsequent to the race a veterinary examination of FRENZEL RHOMB revealed the gelding was exhibiting signs of respiratory distress. An endoscopic examination of FRENZEL RHOMB revealed the gelding to be suffering pharyngitis. Mr. J. Hickmott, trainer of the gelding, was advised that a Veterinary Certificate of Fitness to Race would be required for the gelding before accepting for a future event.

RACE 3 – CORSE PLUS HANDICAP - 1250 metres

OUR FAME (N. Tomizawa) jumped away awkwardly.

On jumping away STREET PARLOUR (D. Tootell) shifted in taking RUBY REGGAE (T. Creek) in onto LADY ACE (B. Vale) at the same time as GOLD HELP ME (J. Bowditch) shifted out, resulting in LADY ACE being hampered.

Near the 100 metres GOLD HELP ME (J. Bowditch), which had been taken out marginally by WILDS OF VIRGINIA (B. Claridge), was obliged to steady off the heels of HOIST SAIL (D. Carney).

Subsequent to the race a veterinary examination of AMANAKAZI revealed no visible abnormalities.

RACE 4 – VISCO 3000 HANDICAP - 1450 metres

K. McEvoy, the rider of LECCINO, explained that he felt that the filly had not travelled at any stage of the race and had become concerned about its performance approaching the 600 metres where he had commenced to put the filly under pressure. He stated that, after having done so, it had failed to lengthen stride and in his opinion may have pulled up short in its action in front. LECCINO was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported the filly was lame in the off fore fetlock. Mr. L. Oliver, representing Mr. R. Hore-Lacy, was advised that a Veterinary Certificate of Fitness to Race would be required before that filly accepted for a future event.

Stewards considered the track assessment subsequent to this race, however, confirmed the DEAD rating owing to the amount of wear to some sections of the racing surface.

RACE 5 – THE DERMODY STAKES - 1000 metres

Stewards considered a submission from Mr. R. Smerdon, the trainer of DUAL SPARK, for S. Price to ride that filly 1kg over its allotted weight. After considering all matters put to them, Stewards granted S. Price permission. He was advised that although Stewards would not proceed against him, in similar circumstances in future he would be expected to seek permission prior to race day.

On jumping away PRESUMED INNOCENT (D. Tootell) shifted out and severely hampered DUAL SPARK (S. Price), tightening that filly onto GLENWEST (S. Cahill), which was inclined to shift in.

Approaching the 600 metres DUAL SPARK (S. Price) shifted in and contacted BEACH BOX (J. Holder).

Inside the 100 metres GLENWEST (S. Cahill), which was inclined to lay in, shifted in onto the heels of SURE BET (T. Creek). BEACH BOX (J. Holder) shifted in abruptly and contacted MIGHTY RAJA (P. Gatt).

N. Tomizawa, the rider of FLAWED LOGIC, was reprimanded for his use of the whip when that filly was out of contention.

RACE 6 – VANELLUS STAKES - 1450 metres

Mr. B. Dunn, the trainer of TERMINUS PRINCE, was fined $50 for failing to declare a rider by the required time.

On jumping SATASHI (A. Findlay) was inconvenienced by the outside barrier gate, which had partly sprung back.

Approaching the 1000 metres MOET NOW (M. Hoppo) was inconvenienced when tightened by ZIP INFATUATION (J. Bowditch), which rolled in.

Near the 600 metres MOWGLII (P. Gatt) became unbalanced when contacted by MCBEAL (J. Maund), which shifted out, and SKILLING (T. Creek), which rolled in.

A. Findlay, the rider of SATASHI, explained that the gelding raced back in the field, as is its normal manner, and he had been happy with the way it had travelled in running. He stated that when the field sprinted approaching the 600 metres, his mount had been left a little flat-footed at a critical stage and although SATASHI prefers more room when making its run, he had elected to persevere closer to the fence because it was his judgement that his mount was not going sufficiently well enough to make ground to the outside. He added that it was his opinion that the tempo of the race had worked against his mount. SATASHI was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported no visible abnormalities.

RACE 7 – KEVERN KLEMICH MEMORIAL HANDICAP - 1250 metres

FIREBALL (D. Tootell) reared and jumped away awkwardly.

YUSRA (P. Gatt) and DOUBLE LEGEND (J. Potter) jumped away awkwardly.

DOUBLE LEGEND (J. Potter) was inconvenienced when taken in by SAXONY GIRL (B. Vale) at the same time as EXPLOSIVE LOVE (J. Bowditch) shifted out and inconvenienced SERAI (N. Tomizawa) tightening that gelding onto DOUBLE LEGEND.

When questioned regarding the apparent disappointing performance of SERAI, N. Tomizawa explained that he had been instructed to ride the gelding quiet as there appeared to be good pace in the race. He stated that after being tightened on jumping SERAI had never got on the bit and that after being placed under pressure in the vicinity of the 600 metres had failed to respond to his riding. SERAI was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported no visible abnormalities. Stewards ordered a swab sample be taken from SERAI.

RACE 8 – ULVAPRON HANDICAP - 1800 metres

CAZIQUE (B. Vale) got its head up and was inclined to race greenly in the early and middle stages.

Near the 800 metres GRETROBY (J. Bowditch) shifted out and as a result obliged CAZIQUE (B. Vale) to race wider.

Near the 600 metres LAWFUL POKER (B. Claridge) was inconvenienced by GRETROBY (J. Bowditch), which rolled in under riding.

SWANLEY (C. Lindop) was eased out of the race in the vicinity of the 500 metres. C. Lindop explained that she had become concerned by her mount’s action at that point. SWANLEY was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported the mare may have swallowed its tongue. An endoscopic examination of SWANLEY revealed no visible abnormalities.

When questioned regarding the apparent disappointing performance by LA MISSIONAIRE, S. Price explained that due to the tempo of the race he had been forced to ask his mount to work from approximately the 1000 metres and shortly after she had commenced to run about and appeared to lose interest in the race. He stated that in the vicinity of the 700 metres when he had put LA MISSIONAIRE under severe pressure his mount had not responded to his riding and commenced to drop out. He added that over the concluding 100 metres he had eased LA MISSIONAIRE out of the race. LA MISSIONAIRE was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported it to be lame in the near foreleg. Mr. A. McEvoy, the trainer of LA MISSIONAIRE, was advised that a Veterinary Certificate of Fitness to Race would be require before accepting for a future event.
