Canterbury (NSW) - Thursday 24 January 2002
Weather: Overcast
Track: Good

GENERAL:

An inquiry into the reason for Scale The Heights being a late withdrawal at 11.16am was adjourned to a date to be fixed when trainer Mr J. O'Shea will be interviewed.

B. Pengelly pleaded guilty to two charges under AR118A of having changed his body protector after weighing out in race 2 on Riu and in race 7 on Blazing Arch. B. Pengelly was fined $500 on each charge and placed on notice that should he reoffend in the near future a suspension may be imposed.

LATE RIDING CHANGES:

Due to personal circumstances, permission was given for L. Beasley to forgo rides at tonight's program. The following rider substitutions were approved:
Race 1 D. Beasley on Aquamonious
Race 3
S. Treweek on Mandalay Bay
Race 4
C. Munce on Veloce
Race 5
G. Buckley on Triko

RACE 1: Bulldogs Fan Night Handicap 1100m

Ode To Thee was slow to begin.

Shortly after the start Burn was crowded between Swivel and Shylass.

For some distance rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight Apo Quality (C. Munce) had to be checked when attempting a run between Soul Singer and Burn where there was insufficient room, then passing the 200m when Apo Quality attempted to improve between Autumn Night and Shylass, Apo Quality ran out resulting in Shylass and Soul Singer being checked and Vizani being hampered. The Stewards advised C. Munce that in issuing a severe reprimand they took into account that he had immediately endeavoured to correct the shift of his horse.

Near the 300m Soul Singer shifted out resulting in Vizani being hampered.

RACE 2: Matador Tow Bars Superfecta 1200m

An objection was lodged by C. Agnew, rider of 4th placegetter, Linga Longa, against Gallup (D. Beadman) being declared 3rd placegetter alleging interference in the straight. After viewing the videos and taking evidence from the parties the Stewards found that at the entrance to the straight Linga Longa was baulked for a run when Gallup shifted out, and then at the 200m and again at the 100m he was inconvenienced when Gallup rolled in as Linga Longa endeavoured to improve to his inside. Taking into account the margin of three-quarters of a length, the Stewards dismissed the objection but advised D. Beadman to make more effort to keep his mounts straight in similar circumstances.

Rinehart was withdrawn at 7.49pm when it was unable to be loaded. Subsequently it was directed that all bets on Rinehart be refunded and that all bets with bookmakers be subject to the following deductions in the dollar from the face value of tickets: 13¢ win, 12¢ place, 30¢ quinella, 13¢ multiple doubles. Trainer Mr M. Conners was advised that Rinehart must barrier trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards before it is permitted to race again.

Night Raider was slow to begin.

At the 700m Riu was hampered when briefly crowded for room by Ya Ya Effendi, which shifted in when racing greenly.

At the entrance to the straight Riu again lost ground when reluctant to take a run inside Ya Ya Effendi.

Over the concluding stages Ya Ya Effendi raced greenly when endeavouring to improve between Night Raider and Kid Millions.

RACE 3: d + d Ball Handicap 1550m

Desert Brigadier blundered at the start.

When the pace steading rounding the first turn Blow The Whistle had to be restrained off the heels of Flying Nicko.

In the straight Daunting Prospect had difficulty obtaining a clear run between The Moonster and Desert Brigadier and raced in restricted room for some distance.

A post-race veterinary examination revealed Desert Brigadier to have suffered a laceration to the outside of the right eye. A post-race veterinary examination of Mandalay Bay, which raced disappointingly, revealed no abnormality. A swab sample was taken.

RACE 4: Triscay Stakes 1200m

La Rieuse and Divine Lily, which were fractious in the stall, were unloaded, examined by the club's veterinary surgeon and passed fit to start.

La Rieuse then raced disappointingly and following the race was found to have sustained a laceration to the near-hind pastern, a puncture wound to the off-hind pastern and a laceration to the tongue.

Subsequently the Stewards interviewed trainer Mr R. Quinton and jockey H. Bowman. H. Bowman stated that in his opinion La Rieuse never stretched out fully. Mr Quinton expressed concern that La Rieuse had been permitted to start in the circumstances.

Descendant was slow to begin.

In the straight Cadastral was badly held up for a run between Okanui and Sophistocat and was unable to be tested. B. Cooper (Okanui) was reprimanded for permitting her mount to shift in passing the 200m resulting in Snow Hero being hampered.

RACE 5: Winning Edge Satellite Stakes 1100m

An application by T. Jones to have Cherubian declared a non-starter was denied by the Stewards when they established that Cherubian reared and was assisted by a barrier attendant as the gates were released resulting in Cherubian, which finished at the rear of the field, losing two to three lengths at the start.

Approaching the 500m Aussiewaa shifted out and made contact with the hindquarters of Sensache, resulting in both horses becoming unbalanced. Fouardee laid out under pressure in the straight.

A veterinary examination of Stormrider, which raced disappointingly, did not reveal any abnormality other than that it had lost its off-hind plate in running. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of Stormrider, Ms B. Cooper stated that she had to make use of the gelding and with coming back in distance Stormrider was always under pressure.

RACE 6: Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL Club Handicap 1100m

Passing the 300m Covina had to be steadied off the heels of Irish Regent.

RACE 7: New Idea Marquee Superfecta 1900m

Beelwin, which reared in the barriers, was removed, examined by the club's veterinarian surgeon and passed fit to start.

Blazing Arch refused to leave the stall when the gates were released. After viewing the patrol film and interviewing starter Mr W. Dale and jockey B. Pengelly, the Stewards declared Blazing Arch a runner. Trainer Mr B. Puckeridge was advised that Blazing Arch must barrier trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards before it is permitted to race again.

On jumping Beelwin and Hydromaster were tightened between Sin City and Halls Of Assembly, which shifted in.

Passing the winning post on the first occasion Beelwin brushed the running rail and became unbalanced.

Near the 1500m Hydromaster had to be steadied off the heels of Aweless, which shifted in whilst overracing.
