Royal Randwick Tuesday 1 January 2002: Race 3 Railway
Square Handicap 1400m
The Stewards today questioned Brent Stanley (Intrusa),
and further questioned G. Buckley, (Wild Meadows), relative to Intrusa
and Wild Meadows falling and Rockley Opera being hampered at the
entrance to the straight.
On the day evidence was taken from A. Gibbons, (Rockley
Opera), G. Buckley and L. Cassidy (Smooth Moves).
After giving consideration to the evidence and the videos of the incident the Stewards
found that rounding the home turn Intrusa, which had been racing
on the back of Paris Plaits (C. Brown), endeavoured to improve to the outside of Smooth
Moves (L. Cassidy) but in so doing the off-fore leg of Intrusa clipped the
near-hind leg of Smooth Moves resulting in Intrusa falling and Wild
Meadows coming over the top of that runner. No blame was attached to any one rider,
however, B. Stanley was advised to exercise care in similar circumstances as the Stewards
found that he positioned his mount too close to the heels of Smooth Moves at that
point of the race.
Canterbury Park Saturday 12 January 2002: Race 6 Frank
Underwood Cup 1900m
Mrs G. Waterhouse, trainer of Agincourt Express,
which raced disappointingly, advised that the gelding had been fully vetted with no
abnormalities apparent and that she would endeavour now to freshen up Agincourt Express
and trial the gelding prior to its next race start.
RACE 1: 24th January Sydney Night Racing Handicap 1200m
When questioned regarding Throwdown getting back in
the field, M. Squires stated that he had been instructed to lead if nothing else went
forward or, alternatively, to take a sit behind the leaders. M. Squires stated that his
mount slipped behind on jumping and for this reason he was obliged to ride the horse
further back than had been anticipated. Trainer Mr T. Sergi stated that the instructions
today had been identical to those given at its most recent start, however on that occasion
App. L. Price was obliged to lead on the horse when trapped wide after beginning from an
outside barrier. A post-race veterinary examination of Throwdown,
which performed disappointingly, revealed the gelding to have suffered a bleeding attack
and will incur an automatic three months ban. A Swab sample was taken.
RACE 2: Young Members Cruising Handicap 1200m
Phar Red jumped awkwardly.
Wild Heart was slow to begin and at the 900m and
again at the 500m had to be checked off the heels of Azzam Valley.
Wild Heart was then held up rounding the home turn
and had to be checked off the heels of Roadaka.
RACE 3: 65 Days to AAMI Golden Slipper 1100m
Anthelion reared as the gates were released and lost
ground.
Deranged shifted out at the start and hampered Vaporeon.
Red Chequer jumped awkwardly, shifted in and
hampered Red Leader.
D. Beadman (Lunchtime Lad) stated
that when his mount jumped particularly well and was inclined to overrace with the
blinkers on and rather than restrain his mount he allowed Lunchtime Lad to maintain
a forward position.
When questioned, H. Bowman and trainer Mr M. Lees were
unable to offer any explanation for the disappointing first-up performance of Red
Chequer.
A post-race veterinary examination of Red Chequer revealed
no abnormality. A swab sample was taken. Mr Lees was advised that Red Chequer must
barrier trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards prior to its next race start.
RACE 4: Triple M Slipper Day Saloon Superfecta 1550m
Trephina was slow to begin.
Figuretta got its head up when being restrained
throughout the early and middle stages.
Sky Kiss had difficulty obtaining a clear run in the
straight and could not be fully tested.
Enchanting Rose was held up when disappointed for a
run at the entrance to the straight.
After the running of this race the track was upgraded to
good at 2.50pm.
M. Butler (Enchanting Rose) was
fined $50 for breaching AR137(c) in that he made a celebratory gesture prior to Enchanting
Rose passing the winning post.
RACE 5: 3rd February Giddy-Up Day Handicap 1550m
Desert Brigadier, which was slow to
begin, was tightened for room shortly after the start between Time Signal and Dublace,
both of which shifted ground.
Making the first turn Shoemaker had to
be checked when tightened for room between Dream Out Loud and Time Signal,
which shifted in away from Manner Hill, which was hanging in.
A short distance later Dream Out Loud was steadied
when Time Signal was taken in by Manner Hill (C. Munce). C. Munce was
reprimanded and advised to ensure that he is fully clear when shifting ground.
Passing the 200m Dream Out Loud was disappointed for
a run between Shoemaker and Desert Brigadier, which shifted in slightly.
RACE 6: Guineas Restaurant Handicap 1550m
Ravenswood was slow to begin.
Paris Plaits shifted out at the start and hampered Paris
Win.
Passing the 200m Ravenswood (D. McLellan)
shifted in and crowded the ground of Woodland. D. McLellan was
reprimanded and advised to make more effort to keep his mounts straight.
A post-race veterinary examination revealed Casa Del Mar
to be lame in the off-fore leg. Ms E. Candy, representing trainer Mrs G. Waterhouse,
indicated that Casa Del Mar will now be spelled.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of Paris
Plaits, C. Brown stated that his mount was left in front and in his
opinion did not run out the 1550m journey. A post-race veterinary examination of Paris
Plaits revealed no abnormality. A swab sample was taken.
RACE 7: Slipper Festival Boot Party Handicap 1200m
Play Mistress was slow to begin.
Floridays was held up for a run in the early part of
the straight.
Aromatherapy was held up for a run until near the
100m.
Over the concluding stages Palace Consort shifted
out resulting in A New Song being hampered.
A post-race veterinary examination revealed Play Mistress,
which performed disappointingly, sustained a laceration to the off-hind pastern in
running. A veterinary clearance will be required prior to Play Mistress's
next race start.
When questioned regarding the amount of pace in the early
stages, D. McLellan rider of Miss Varikos stated that he was under instructions
from trainer Mr D. Smith to make use of his inside barrier and to ride the mare in a
forward position. D. McLellan added that when Miss Varikos jumped to the lead and
as App. L. Price (Cardiff Bay) was endeavouring to ease he
persisted in the lead knowing the pace was fast with a view to easing Miss Varikos when
Cardiff Bay relieved the pressure and took the sit. However, App. L. Price
explained that Cardiff Bay, which was backing up from its run at
Canterbury Park on 10 January, overraced badly and as a result he was unable to restrain
the gelding and eventually allowed Cardiff Bay on the first turn to stride to the
lead.
The inquiry was adjourned so that Mr D. P. Smith, trainer
of Miss Varikos, could be interviewed relative to the instructions
given.
RACE 8: Become An STC Member Superfecta 1900m
Trainer Mr N. Hazlewood's explanation for not presenting Port
Express on course by the prescribed time was accepted.
