GENERAL:
H. Bowman was fined $300 for accepting
rides for which he was overweight (AR120(b)).
RACE 1: Tooheys New Handicap 1100m:
As B. Stanley, who was a late replacement,
could not make the weight M. Squires was substituted as the rider of Che Miracolo. Luskin
L'Etoile jumped in at the start hampering Che Miracolo. Luskin L'Etoile
continued to hang in throughout the early stages and in so doing hampered Che Miracolo.
Cindy's Babe hung out badly mid-race taking Grand Estime wide. Trainer Ms L.
Aspros was advised that Cindy's Babe must barrier trial to the satisfaction of the
Stewards before its next race start. When questioned R. Quinn (Clapper) stated that
he had been under instructions to position his mount in the lead or outside the lead, but
if the pace was fast to take a sit. He added that Clapper jumped only fairly and
although he rode his mount along it did not muster early speed and was quickly crossed by Cindy's
Babe. R. Quinn stated that he finished up in a three wide mid-field position and
although placed under pressure prior to the 600m Clapper ran home only fairly. A
post-race veterinary examination of Clapper did not reveal any abnormality. A swab
sample was taken. When questioned L. Cassidy, rider of winner Mabe, stated that
whilst the filly had got back in its only two race starts due to wide barriers and missing
the start, she had shown pace in her work and trials and he was instructed to try to jump
her out and take up a forward position. He added that when Mabe jumped cleanly he
took advantage of his favourable barrier and allowed the filly to lead. Mr P. Snowden,
representing trainer Mr J. Hawkes, said that Clapper's win at Hawkesbury had not
been particularly impressive and also on that occasion the filly had missed the start
slightly but had been able to gradually work through and lead. Mr Snowden confirmed that Mabe
had missed the start in its only two races and added that in his view the filly was set a
big task mid-race after racing fiercely and had travelled particularly wide in its
previous start at Warwick Farm on 21 July 2001.
RACE 2: Become an STC Member Handicap
1100m:
Passing the 600m Wyangan Pines was
held up when disappointed for a run between Blinder and Al Maha, and then
was inclined to lay out under pressure in the straight. When questioned regarding the
disappointing performance of Al Maha J. Cassidy stated that the horse began
satisfactorily, but did not show early speed and did not travel at any stage. Trainer Mr
G. Begg stated that whilst he was disappointed with the run, the trial form may have been
somewhat flattering and he undertook to report to the Stewards if there was anything amiss
with Al Maha in the days subsequent. A post-race veterinary examination of Al
Maha did not reveal any abnormality. A swab sample was taken.
RACE 3: Wests Leagues Handicap 1100m:
Hickory Snip was slow to begin.
RACE 4: Australian United Fresh
Superfecta 1550m:
Au Naturale was a late withdrawal at
9.17am on veterinary advice. Daunting Prospect was fractious in the stalls. Big
Doug was slow to begin. On the home turn Melt The Guns and Royal Heir
came together when Melt The Guns endeavoured to shift out to obtain clear running.
Mr B. Killion, representing trainer Mrs G. Waterhouse when questioned regarding the
performance of Marslanding, could offer no excuse for its disappointing run apart
from the fact that it was inclined to overrace when racing at the girth of the leader, Little
Bit Lively. A post-race veterinary examination of Marslanding did not reveal
any abnormality. A swab sample was taken. C. Brown (Melt The Guns) pleaded guilty
to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that he permitted his mount to shift out
approaching the 200m resulting in Big Doug being checked and Tardio being
tightened onto Outrank. C. Brown was suspended from riding in races for a period to
commence on Sunday 12 August 2001 and to expire on Thursday 23 August 2001 on which day he
may ride.
RACE 5: Suncorp Metway Handicap
1550m:
Near the 100m Ethos shifted out
briefly hampering Whatever It Took. It was reported that Whatever It Took lost
its near-hind plate in running. A post-race veterinary examination of Highest Cool,
which weakened after racing wide throughout, did not reveal any abnormality. A swab sample
was taken.
RACE 6: Parkroyal at Darling Harbour
Handicap 1250m:
Dr. Freeze was slow to begin. Making
the first turn Ray's Way had to be steadied off the heels of Zediver. Simon's
Galaxy hung out badly throughout the middle stages and in the straight near the 200m
its rider App. M. Squires dropped his whip. The racing manners of Simon's Galaxy
were brought to the attention of trainer Mr P. Perry.
RACE 7: Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL
Club Handicap 1900m:
A veterinary examination of Lord
Kandahar passed the horse fit to start. Aromatherapy was slow to begin. A
post-race veterinary examination revealed Aromatherapy was displaying a poor
recovery rate. L. Cassidy (Kesia) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding
under AR137(a) in that he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of Dress
Circle passing the 700m resulting in Dress Circle being taken in onto Vain
Vigil, which resulted in Aromatherapy having to be checked and lose its
rightful running. Lord Kandahar, which was following, was hampered in consequence.
L. Cassidy was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence on 12 August 2001
and to expire on Thursday 23 August 2001.
RACE 8: Truscott's Toyota Superfecta
1100m:
Part-owner and trainer Mr S. O'Brien was
questioned when it was discovered that Official had an additional brand to the
near-side shoulder. Mr O'Brien gave evidence that he had bought Official at a
dispersal sale. It was ascertained that Official had been registered in Hong Kong
under the name Make It Lovely in April 1997 and had returned to Australia in May
1998. The Stewards withdrew Official at 3.12pm and advised Mr O'Brien that he must
approach the Registration Department to ensure that the Document of Description fully
corresponds with Official's brands and markings. Nanu's Boy was slow to
begin. Hannibal hung out rounding the home turn.
