Canterbury (NSW) - Monday 6 May 2002
Weather: Fine
Track: Good

Supplementary Reports:
Rosehill Gardens Saturday 4 May 2002
Race 6 Roman Printing Lord Mayor's Cup 2400m

Ms E. Candy, representing trainer Mrs G. Waterhouse, today reported that Velsontas had pulled up well following the race apart from the laceration to the off-hind leg, which had been reported following the event. She added that it was the intention of the stable to continue with Velsontas' racing program.

Race 8: Co-Ordinated Landscapes Superfecta 1100m

Trainer Mr A. Denham today stated that following Trailer's disappointing performance the gelding had pulled up well and he attributed the poor run to the fact that due to circumstances he did not trial trailer prior to the race.

RACE 1: Oatlands Handicap 1200m

As R. Quinn was overweight M. Squires was substituted as the rider of Flying Crown. R. Quinn was reprimanded. On arrival at the track M. Squires advised that he could not make the weight. As no other senior rider was available M. Squires was given approval to ride ½kg over. A veterinary examination of Estaad behind the barriers passed that colt fit to start. Near the 600m Well Informed had to be checked off the heels of Captain Nelson. Estaad hung out rounding the home turn. A post-race veterinary examination revealed Estaad was lame in the near-fore leg. Trainer Mr P. Perry was advised that a veterinary certificate would be required before Estaad is permitted to race again. Rounding the home turn Lion Dancer shifted out to improve around the heels of Robert Royale and in doing so hampered Marnanna and Well Informed.

RACE 2: Telopea Handicap 1100m

Shortly after the start Timidity got its head up and lost ground. Approaching the 800m Kianben and Jewel Attraction bumped. Kianben then raced fiercely for some distance thereafter. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of Oh She Said, D. Beasley stated that the filly travelled only fairly in the run and when the field sprinted passing the 500m Oh She Said was left flatfooted and then was most disappointing in its failure to finish off its race. He stated that he had suggested to connections that they step the filly up in distance at its next run. A post-race veterinary examination revealed Oh She Said was in season. A swab sample was taken. A post-race veterinary examination of Kianben, which weakened in the straight, revealed no abnormality.

RACE 3: Matador Towbars Handicap 1250m

Lifesaver began awkwardly. Shantey, which was slow to begin, was crowded for room shortly after the start between Abraham Plains and Rangehill, which shifted in. Passing the 1200m Jewel Time shifted out and away from Omawind resulting in Riu and Lifesaver being crowded for room inside of Goodrum. Near the 900m Riu was briefly crowded for room by Rangehill, which shifted in. A post-race veterinary examination of Mt. Gower, which weakened in the straight, revealed no abnormality. A swab sample was taken.

RACE 4: Mancorp Quality Homes Superfecta 1550m

Near 1200m Southern Regard had to be checked off the heels of Celestial Kiss. A post-race veterinary examination revealed Celestial Kiss had been galloped on the near-hind leg in running. At the same point Catmint had to be checked off the heels of Recover. B. Cooper (Snaatic) reported that rounding the first turn her saddle shifted placing her at a disadvantage for the remainder of the event. Passing the 700m Go With Dancers had to be steadied off the heels of Snaatic, which shifted in. When questioned regarding the improved performance of the winner, Scale The Heights, as compared to its first-up run at Royal Randwick on 25 April 2002, trainer Mr J. O'Shea stated that whilst Scale The Heights was beaten four lengths on that occasion, he was not disappointed as he felt the mare would benefit from the run. He added that today with the drop in class and the fact Scale The Heights was able to go forward in a slowly run race also had improved the mare's chances. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of Recover, C. Rixon stated that when he took hold of the mare in the early stages Recover commenced to lay out and continued to do so for the remainder of the event. He added that when placed under pressure in the straight Recover ran on only fairly. A post-race veterinary examination of Recover revealed no abnormality. A swab sample was taken.

RACE 5: Marsfield Handicap 1550m

Romany Gypsy was late arriving on course due to transport difficulties. A veterinary examination passed the gelding fit to start. Leaving the 400m Rocksinga hung in and briefly crowded Been Gypt, which was giving ground. Approaching the 100m Iron Cross was checked and shifted out when disappointed for a run between Grand Investor and Rocksinga, which shifted out. An inquiry was opened into an incident approaching and passing the 400m. After taking evidence from D. Beadman (Iron Cross) and L. Beasley (Grand Investor) the Stewards established that approaching the 400m, after initially attempting to check back off the heels of Been Gypt, D. Beadman was left with no alternative but to shift out to avoid the heels of that gelding and in doing so made heavy contact with Grand Investor, which was racing tight to his outside and holding its ground. In the incident Iron Cross got its head up, resulting in D. Beadman becoming unbalanced in the saddle and his body made contact with the body of L. Beasley. A short distance later D. Beadman attempted to direct Iron Cross out away from the heels of Been Gypt and in doing so his left arm became raised about or near the body of L. Beasley. After considering the evidence of both riders and viewing all available videos the Stewards were not of the belief that any contact between the riders was intentional and, therefore, no further action was taken.

RACE 6: Beecroft Handicap 1200m

Something Gold was a late withdrawal at 9.55am acting on veterinary advice. An objection was lodged by D. McLellan, rider of 2 nd placegetter, Gee Trump, against Washington Girl (C. Munce) being declared the winner alleging interference near the 75m. After taking evidence from all parties concerned and after viewing the video the Stewards established that at the 50m Washington Girl shifted in momentarily and brushed Gee Trump. As the Stewards were of the opinion that had the incident not occurred Washington Girl would have beaten Gee Trump home the protest was dismissed. Torlina was slow to begin. Our Jazzi Girl began awkwardly. On jumping Lady Pavlova was crowded by Corner Kicker, which shifted in slightly. Approaching the first turn Washington Girl was steadied from the heels of Lucky Gwen (App. J. Ford) as that horse crossed, then shortly afterwards again was steadied and shifted out when Lucky Gwen steadied in front. App. J. Ford was reprimanded. Rounding the home turn Torlina was held up on the heels of Lucky Gwen. A post-race veterinary examination revealed Washington Girl was lame in the near-fore leg. Mr Burns, representing trainer Mr M. Lees, was advised that a veterinary certificate would be required before Washington Girl is permitted to race again. A post-race veterinary examination revealed Our Jazzi Girl was lame in the off-fore leg. Trainer Mr J. Lee was advised that a veterinary certificate would be required before Our Jazzi Girl is permitted to race again.

RACE 7: Carlingford Handicap 1900m

On jumping Phenom was hampered by Romeo George, which shifted out. Banner Edition began awkwardly, shifted out and was steadied from the heels of Val's Regard. For some distance after the 1600m Romeo George raced fiercely, and leaving the 1400m and again near the 1000m was steadied from the heels of Imperial Lodge, which shifted in momentarily. In the middle stages Phenom overraced and on two occasions had to be checked from the heels of Val's Regard. Approaching and leaving the 400m Monte Mist was held up when racing behind El Rapido and to the inside of Optimax.

RACE 8: Eastwood Superfecta 1900m

As R. Quinn was overweight N. Seymour was substituted as the rider of Matif. Following his ride in race 6 D. McLellan was stood down by the club's doctor and T. Jones was substituted as the rider of Motorace. Passing the winning post on the first occasion Gunnery clipped the heels of Irish Crusader, shifted out and hampered Fete Champetre.
