Race 1 - STAN SHANNON SUPER VOBIS HANDICAP -
1000 metres:
"Zakynthos Star" was reluctant to enter the
starting stalls, and as a result the start of the race was delayed. Mr. D. Sofianos, who
was representing Ms S. Gilbert, trainer of the filly, was notified that "Zakynthos
Star" was suspended from racing until such time as it performs to the satisfaction of
the Stewards in an organised trial, at which time a barrier test certificate must be
obtained for it.
Race 2 - RUPERT GREENE SUPER VOBIS HANDICAP -
1100 metres:
"Pesto" raced today in the ownership of G.
Johnson, and G. T. and Mrs. L. Johnson.
Due to a misunderstanding R. McLeod was notified as the
rider of "Miss Juba". Due to a further misunderstanding Cathy Payne was notified
as the rider of that filly when, in fact, Michelle Payne had been notified to ride
"Miss Juba".
On jumping away "Swoopa" shifted out and
tightened "River Serenade" on to "Belleek".
Near the 700 metres "Blushing Plume" was hampered
when tightened for room by "Swoopa", which was taken in by "River
Serenade" which, after initially shifting out towards "Fairbit", shifted in
away from that filly after being taken in by "Fairbit", which was brushed by
"Verse Lago", which shifted in slightly. The incident was found to be
accidental.
Near the 100 metres "Miss Rosedale", which was
laying in, had to change course to avoid the heels of "Bar Sector".
The Club's Veterinary Surgeon reported that
"Swoopa" sustained lacerations to the off fore leg and the near hind leg during
the running of the race.
Race 3 - MURRAY HANDICAP - 1000 metres:
Prior to correct weight being declared S. Baster, rider of
"Racaban", fifth placegetter, viewed the Stewards' patrol video and decided not
to lodge an objection.
On jumping away "Demontage" was hampered by
"Costly Addition", which shifted out.
Shortly after the start "Flash Line" was bumped
by "Senor Pagolino", which shifted in.
W. Davis, rider of "Our Blitz (NZ)" was found
guilty of a charge of careless riding, the careless riding being that near the 800 metres
he permitted his mount to shift in when not sufficiently clear of "Just like
Kelly", thereby taking "Just like Kelly" in across the running of
"Racaban", resulting in "Racaban" having to be checked. W. Davis was
suspended from riding in races for a period to commence at midnight on Thursday, 6th
June, and to expire at midnight on Monday, 24th June, 2002.
Race 4 - GEORGE A. DAVIS SUPER VOBIS HANDICAP
- 1800 metres:
An inquiry into the reason for A. Findlay failing to fulfil
his engagement to ride "Martristal (NZ)" in this event was adjourned to a date
to be fixed.
Acting on a report from the analyst that the pre-race blood
sample taken from "Landdrost" showed a TCO2 level in excess of the level
permissible under the Rules, the Stewards interviewed Mr. L. Xuereb, trainer of the
gelding.
Mr. Xuereb assured the Stewards that "Landdrost"
had not received any treatment which could lead to the finding on the initial sample. Due
to the blood sample being taken from "Landdrost" later than normal as
"Landdrost" was late arriving at the racecourse, the Stewards were notified that
they may not have a confirmation of the TCO2 level in the screening sample prior to the
race.
The Stewards then received advice from the Analyst that it
was likely that, whilst the testing of the confirmatory sample had not been completed, it
was probable that the result would indicate a level of TCO2 above what is permitted under
the Rules.
The Stewards then withdrew "Landdrost" from the
race at 2.07 p.m., and were subsequently notified by the analyst that the TCO2
concentration in the blood sample was in excess of 36 mmol/l in plasma.
Further evidence was taken from Mr L Xuereb and registered
stablehand Ms Tanya Secombes who strapped the gelding.
An inquiry into this irregularity was adjourned to a date
to be fixed to allow the reserve sample to be submitted to a referee laboratory in
accordance with the provisions of Australian Rule of Racing 178D.
Subsequently the Stewards ordered that all monies wagered
on "Landdrost" be refunded, and that all successful bets on horses prior to the
time of withdrawal of "Landdrost" be subject to the following deductions in the
dollar from the face value of the ticket: Win Bets: Seven cents; Place Bets: Eight Cents;
Winning Concession Bets: Seven cents, and Doubles Bets; Seven cents. All monies bet after
the Stewards' declaration of withdrawal were ordered to be paid at the face value of the
ticket.
An inquiry into the reason for "Runon" having to
be checked approaching the 1600 metres was adjourned to a date to be fixed.
An inquiry into the reason for "Circumnavigating"
having to be checked and "Wild Classic" being hampered near the 1300 metres was
adjourned to a date to be fixed.
Near the 1200 metres "Mr. Longfellow" was
inconvenienced when tightened slightly between "Runon" and "Twice the Class
(NZ)", which shifted out slightly at that stage. In the incident L. Milham, rider of
"Mr. Longfellow" became unbalanced.
In the middle stages of the race "Unbridled Lad"
got its head in the air and raced ungenerously.
Near the 500 metres "Runon" was hampered due to
"Sovereign Point" weakening at that stage, and as a result "Twice the Class
(NZ)", which was following, had to be checked.
Rounding the home turn "Johnny say Sorry" was
inconvenienced when racing tight on the inside of "Martristal (NZ)".
An inquiry into the reason for "Martristal (NZ)"
having to be checked near the 500 metres was adjourned to a date to be fixed as C. Newitt,
rider of "Wild Classic", had left the racecourse.
The Stewards also adjourned an inquiry to a date to be
fixed into C. Newitt leaving the racecourse without obtaining a clearance from the
Stewards.
Race 5 - CYRIL BEECHEY HANDICAP - 1800 metres:
"Pleasant Mick", which began awkwardly, was
tightened for room between "Arctic Boy (NZ)" and "Deals".
Race 6 - LE PINE FUNERAL SERVICES HANDICAP -
1400 metres:
Near the 1100 metres "Quietly Adamant" was
tightened on to "Aubaine" by "Fashion Era", which shifted in away from
"La Banca (NZ)".
Shortly after straightening "Splash of Love"
shifted out and inconvenienced "Ruling Eyes".
Race 7 - GLENFERN WELTER HANDICAP - 1400 metres:
"Laird's Bounty" which was a little slow to
begin, was then tightened for room between "Mazzerati" and "Power and
Rhythm (NZ)", which shifted out.
Near the 400 metres "Mazzerati" was tightened for
room between "San Antone (NZ)" and "Luxford" which was shifting out on
the outside of "Silver Logie", which was also shifting out.
Shortly after this incident 'Mazzerati" had to be
eased to avoid the heels of "San Antone (NZ)", which shifted in when not
sufficiently clear, and as a result "Super Harry (NZ)" was hampered.
Shortly after straightening "Dance Widdis" had to
be eased off the heels of "Rhone Valley".
Race 8 - GREEN WAVE SUPER VOBIS HANDICAP -
1400 metres:
Prior to correct weight F. Villella, rider of
"Oarsome Ruler", second past the post, viewed the Stewards' videos with Mr. C.
Hyland, who was representing Mr. P. Hyland, the trainer of the gelding.
F. Villella lodged an objection against "Star of
Snippets" being declared the winner on the grounds of alleged interference from near
the 200 metres to the winning post. After they had all viewed the Stewards' videos, and
after the Stewards had heard the submissions of the parties concerned, the Stewards upheld
the objection, the amended placings being "Oarsome Ruler", 1st,
"Star of Snippets", 2nd, "Ashkalante", 3rd and
"Orthopaedic", 4th.
It was established that near the 200 metres "Star of
Snippets" shifted out towards "Oarsome Ruler" away from
"Ashkalante", which was shifting out at that stage. Near the 100 metres
"Star of Snippets" continued to shift out and hampered "Oarsome
Ruler". R. Wheeler, rider of "Star of Snippets", was notified that in
future he must stop riding and straighten his mounts when they shift ground.
On jumping away "Umdinger" shifted in and bumped
"Craigmoor".
Also on jumping away "Orthopaedic" shifted in and
inconvenienced "Centrified (NZ)".
In the middle stages of the race "Umdinger" raced
ungenerously.
SWAB SAMPLES were taken from the winners of
all races today.
