Weather: Overcast
Rail: Out 5.5 metres from the 900 to 300 metres.

RACE 1 – MIELE TWO-YEAR-OLD MAIDEN PLATE – 1217 metres

BLU DE VILLE (N. Tomizawa) and MASTER SIMBA (M. Hoppo) were slow to jump.

FATIGUED (J. Potter), which was inclined to lay in, raced greenly in the early stages.

Near the 1000 metres LENSTRA (J. Maund) was obliged to steady off the heels of BENEFIT ROAD (M. Neilson).

Approaching the 600 metres POWER TO RULE (J. O’Connor), which had commenced to race keenly, had to steady off FATIGUED (J. Potter).

STOCKPORT (D. Carney) hung out making the turn at the entrance to the straight.

Inside the 400 metres LENSTRA (J. Maund) shifted out and brushed KATE’S ACE (B. Vale).

RACE 2 – DES ROSS MEMORIAL MAIDEN PLATE (1st Division) – 1059 metres

MIDNIGHT MAN (D. Azis) and AURORA LIGHT (M. Neilson) jumped awkwardly.

MELODY MAGIC (D. Tootell) and RUBY REGGAE (C. Bryant) were slow to jump.

ALLUDING (D. Carney) jumped outwards and inconvenienced GLORY MARCH (S. Cahill) on jumping away.

RACE 3 – MALAYSIA AIRLINES MAIDEN PLATE (2nd Division) – 1059 metres

The start of this race was delayed owing to MOTHERS and BIG IMPRA proving difficult to load. MOTHERS was withdrawn at 1.25 p.m. and BIG IMPRA was withdrawn at 1.26 p.m.

Stewards ruled that all monies invested on MOTHERS be refunded. Bets made on other runners prior to the withdrawal were to be paid on the face value of the ticket less:
Bets for a WIN - 2 cents in the dollar, and
Bets for a PLACE - 3 cents in the dollar.
SP Bets are subject to the deductions.

All bets on BIG IMPRA were declared off. Bets on other runners were not affected.

Mrs. E. Whittle, representing Mr. M. Whittle, Trainer of MOTHERS, and Ms. K. Evans Trainer of BIG IMPRA, were advised their fillies were now suspended from racing until they could load without delay in an organised trial.

AVIADOR, which had been restless in the gates, was subject to a Veterinary examination and ruled fit to start.

AVIADOR (C. Lever), MAJOR PORTION (S. Cahill) and ANGELAQ (N. Tomizawa) were all slow to jump.

TAOH (J. Maund) jumped inwards and hampered STENOWN (J. Potter) on jumping away.

Near the 600 metres VALIANT CHIEF (M. Neilson), while being restrained, got its head up and raced greenly for a short distance.

Approaching the 500 metres WILD BY NATURE (J. Holder) was obliged to steady away from the heels of DIDNEDA (W. Kerford), which rolled out.

RACE 4 – CONDON FAMILY MAIDEN PLATE – 1417 metres

COUNTER CAPERS was withdrawn by Stewards at 9.33 a.m., acting on a confirmed advice from Mr. J. Murray, acting for Mr. Joe Hall Trainer of the filly, that it was lame in the near foreleg.

LORD ROYDON (T. Creek) reared on jumping away and missed the start.

GEMQUEE (C. Bryant) jumped away awkwardly.

Inside the 900 metres GHAAZI (NZ) (S. Price) was inconvenienced when obliged to shift out and steady off the heels of TELITE (S. Cahill). Shortly after, CARRAJA (B. Vale), which had commenced to race keenly, was obliged to be restrained off the heels of GHAAZI (NZ).

When questioned regarding his riding of GEMQUEE in the middle stages of the race, Apprentice C. Bryant explained the mare began better than he had been advised would be the case, and as a result he was three wide near the 900 metres. He stated that to get closer to the rail he had attempted to obtain a position immediately in front of GHAAZI (NZ) (S. Price). When he failed to succeed in this attempt C. Bryant said that he had improved outside the leaders approaching the 500 metres and shortly after GEMQUEE was under severe pressure and commenced to weaken. He conceded that he had been instructed to attempt to ride the mare back in the field. Stewards reprimanded C. Bryant and advised him that in future he would be expected to ride with greater initiative.

Subsequent to this event S. Cahill sought to be examined by the Club’s Doctor as he was feeling unwell. He was stood down from his remaining engagements.

RACE 5 – MILLUNA STUD CLASS 2 HANDICAP – 1059 metres

S. Cahill was questioned in regard to his reasons for being unable to make the allotted weight for SPAR in this event. Stewards considered S. Cahill’s explanation and took into account that he was feeling unwell, however, considered that he had breached ARR 120(b) and was fined $100.

Subsequent to the race HOIST SAIL was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported the gelding was slightly lame in the off hind leg.

RACE 6 – MIELE CLASS 3 HANDICAP – 1617 metres

LOVELLE (J. Maund) jumped away awkwardly and shifted in onto ESPRIT DE JEUNE (C. Bryant), taking that mare in onto CHOCOLATE ÉCLAIR (J. Potter), which was tightened for room and taken in onto ON THE NATCH (K. Louca), which shifted in and inconvenienced MAGICAL SPIRIT (J. Bowditch).

Over the concluding stages CAPTIVATE YOU (T. Creek), which was inclined to lay out throughout, hung out and proved difficult to ride. T. Creek reported that CAPTIVATE YOU had hung out throughout the event. Mr. D. O’Leary, Trainer of CAPTIVATE YOU, was advised that should the mare continue to race in this manner, action may be taken against it.

At the entrance to the straight ON THE NATCH (K. Louca) laid out, across the heels of LORD JAPATO (NZ) (J. Lyon). LORD JAPATO (NZ) sustained a laceration to the near hind coronet during the race.

RACE 7 – SARATOGA SPRINGS CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 1317 metres

FONNIX was withdrawn by Stewards at 8.55 a.m., acting on a confirmed advice from Trainer Mr. C. Bromley the filly was lame in the near hind leg.

ROMANOUS JEWEL (N. Tomizawa) was slow to jump.

In the vicinity of the 1000 metres NEVADA RED (K. Louca), which was inclined to race greenly, got its head up and became reluctant to hold its position, shifted in, contacted the running rail and lost its position. In consequence MISS DANGER (J. Potter) was inconvenienced.

Near the 900 metres SIMONDE (Darren Holland), which was inclined to race fiercely, was obliged to be restrained off the heels of EL VANA (J. Bowditch), which shifted in. J. Bowditch was advised of his obligations when shifting ground.

Inside the 200 metres ROMANOUS JEWEL (N. Tomizawa), under pressure, was inclined to lay in onto the heels of WALAMA (NZ) (M. Neilson), which was inclined to lay out under pressure.

RACE 8 – HUMPHRY SPRINGS 3-Y-O CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 1617 metres

LUCKY BLIGHTER (T. Creek) jumped away awkwardly.

LUCKY BLIGHTER (T. Creek) got its head up and was inclined to race ungenerously and proved difficult to ride in the early stages of the race. Subsequent to the race a Veterinary inspection of LUCKY BLIGHTER revealed no visible abnormalities.
