Balaklava (SA) - Wednesday 19 September 2001

Track: Good
Weather: Fine
Rail: Out 3 metres from the 900 metres to the 450 metres.

RACE 1 – TROUBRIDGE HOTEL/VENTNOR HOTEL C, G & E MAIDEN PLATE

W. Kerford replaced D. Tootell as the rider of BELTELLO when it was established that D. Tootell had previously been engaged and declared as the rider of NORMOUS. After taking evidence from that rider and Mr. W. Lewis, representing Mr. M. Lewis, trainer of the gelding, Mr. M. Lewis was fined the sum of $50 for declaring a rider when no firm engagement had been made.

CASEBROOK suffered a bi-lateral bleeding attack during the running of the race and as a result Mr. D. Meaney, trainer of that gelding, was advised that CASEBROOK was now banned from racing for a period of three months under ARR 53A.

SO LATE was subject to a veterinary inspection and endoscoping following the running of the race which revealed that the gelding was showing signs of oxygen deficit. The Club’s Veterinary Surgeon formed the opinion that SO LATE may have been suffering a soft palate problem. As a result, Mr. L. Macdonald, advised Stewards that SO LATE would now be worked in a tongue tie with the view of that gelding possibly using a tongue tie in future races.

RACE 2 – YORKE VALLEY HOTEL/MINLATON HOTEL SABIS F&M MAIDEN PLATE

The start of this race was delayed owing to BANC O’ GOLD proving difficult to be placed in its stall. As a result Mr. M. McLauchlan, trainer of the mare, was advised that a repetition of its behaviour could lead to it being banned for a period.

In the vicinity of the 900 metres OIL CAN ANNIE (Darren Holland) shifted in abruptly resulting in CHIQUITA SUNRISE (J. Potter) being severely tightened for galloping room and forced to lose its position. Shortly after OIL CAN ANNIE shifted out resulting in DUBAI CLARE (D. Carney) being forced wider on the track. Mr. J. Gask, trainer of OIL CAN ANNIE, was advised that a repetition of that mare’s behaviour in running could lead to it being banned for a period.

In the vicinity of the 900 metres OUR BUTTERFLY (J. Burgess) rolled in resulting in BUTTON COUNTER (C. Lever) being tightened for galloping room and forced to lose its position. In consequence COUNTER CAPERS (P. Gatt) was forced to change direction to avoid the heels of BUTTON COUNTER resulting in OIL CAN ANNIE (Darren Holland), which had been racing on the outside of COUNTER CAPERS, being inconvenienced.

In the vicinity of the 700 metres OUR BUTTERFLY (J. Burgess) rolled in resulting in BUTTON COUNTER (C. Lever) again being eased. Stewards took no further action as they believed that no one rider was responsible for both incidents.

Stewards questioned C. Lever, rider of BUTTON COUNTER, in relation to his riding of that filly in the first 200 metres of the event. C. Lever reported to Stewards that he had allowed BUTTON COUNTER to balance up in the early stages of the event, which had allowed SNATCH IT (J. Maund) to take a forward position on BUTTON COUNTER and as a result, in the vicinity of the 1000 metres, SNATCH IT had rolled in resulting in BUTTON COUNTER having to be eased slightly. C. Lever further stated that interference at the 900 metres and again at the 700 metres had materially affected the performance of the filly. Stewards noted the explanation tendered but advised C. Lever that, under similar circumstances, he should endeavour to place more pressure on his mounts in the early stages of an event to obtain the best position in the field.

A veterinary inspection of BUTTON COUNTER following the running of the race revealed no visible abnormalities.

RACE 3 – MAITLAND HOTEL/ROYAL EXCHANGE HOTEL CLASS 2 HANDICAP

Acting on confirmed veterinary advice that TI AMO KING was suffering soreness in the near foreleg and was unfit to take its place in the field, Stewards ordered the withdrawal of that gelding at 9.50 am.

A swab sample was taken from TWISTED DREAM, winner of the race.

JANDOH was subject to a veterinary inspection at the start and passed fit to take its place in the field.

TRUCE D’ETOILE (D. Tootell) and SEA DAN (P. Gatt) were both slow to begin.

A veterinary inspection of JANDOH following the running of the race revealed that the mare was suffering soreness in both fore fetlock joints and shoulder muscles.

RACE 4 – PORT VICTORIA HOTEL MOTEL/MELVILLE HOTEL SABIS 3YO CLASS 1 HANDICAP

D. Tootell replaced C. Lever as the rider of PATAGONIA owing to C. Lever being excessively overweight. Subsequently that rider was fined the sum of $100 under ARR 120(b).

On jumping away SCENARAJA (M. Hoppo) jumped inwards onto RUMAH BATIK (B. Neville) resulting in that filly being taken in onto SPINNING SILK (S. Price), which resulted in that filly being tightened for galloping room and forced to ease.

RACE 5 – WESTON MILLING CLASS 1 HANDICAP

Stewards opened an inquiry in relation to the riding tactics adopted by S. Camilleri, rider of CZARINA, from shortly after the start to in the vicinity of the 400 metres. After taking evidence from that rider and Mr. P. Jolly, trainer of CZARINA, Stewards adjourned their inquiries to the offices of Thoroughbred Racing S.A. Limited at 2.30 pm on Monday, 24th September 2001.

A veterinary inspection of CZARINA following the running of the race revealed no visible abnormalities.

RACE 6 – ARDROSSAN HOTEL MOTEL/ARTHURTON HOTEL CLASS 3 HANDICAP

The start of this race was delayed owing to ORMISTON, which was fractious in the barriers, undergoing a veterinary inspection which passed that gelding fit to take its place in the field.

In the vicinity of the 700 metres TO PAY UP (D. Tootell) was forced to ease momentarily to avoid the heels of KINESIS (C. Lever).

RACE 7 – CORNWALL HOTEL/DALRYMPLE HOTEL CLASS 3 HANDICAP

In the vicinity of the 600 metres ATAGO EMPEROR (J. Maund) rolled in resulting in KAMWAY (B. Claridge) having to be eased to avoid the heels of that horse.

TWIN PEAKS (S. Price) showed a tendency to lay in over the concluding stages of the event. A subsequent veterinary inspection of that filly revealed soreness in the off fore fetlock.

RACE 8 – MOONTA HOTEL CLASS 1 HANDICAP

The start of this race was delayed owing to ROMANOUS JEWEL undergoing a veterinary inspection at the start and being passed fit to take its place in the field.

DANCERKOV (C. Lever) was slow to begin.

In the vicinity of the 500 metres GALORIOUS BIRD (S. Price), whilst being eased, became unbalanced for a short distance.

DANCERKOV (C. Lever) showed a tendency to lay in badly over the concluding stages of the race. A subsequent veterinary inspection of that gelding revealed no visible abnormalities.

GENERAL:

H. McKechnie was fined the sum of $100 for failing to produce a clearance to ride following a recent injury.
