of yearlings went through the ring at January's record breaking 2001 Magic Millions
Yearling Sale on the Gold Coast. At this point
of the season we will check up on the progress of the top 21 priced horses from the latest
sale and see how they are going in the early part of their two-year-old days.
1 - SUNDAY JOY

This million dollar filly who is bred to be one of the
country's best ever won her first race from her third start in Brisbane on the weekend in
the listed Tommy Smith Slipper over 1200 metres. The Doomben win enables her to take her
place in the 2YO Classic on the Gold Coast in just under two weeks. Owned by John and
Julie Singleton's Strawberry Hill Stud Syndicate, Sunday Joy has placed second at her two
other runs. In the leading Randwick stables of Gai Waterhouse, Sunday Joy is sure to be a
force in the coming couple of seasons before ultimately headlining Strawberry Hill Stud's
broodmare band.
2 - SUNDAY WHISPER

One of two high priced yearlings picked up by Auckland based
bloodstock agent Rob McAnulty, Sunday Whisper is by the champion Japan based stallion
Sunday Silence. McAnulty is keen on this youngster and he will not be pushing his young
filly. Valsora meanwhile has a yearling by Timber Country to be sold in Sydney at Easter,
while her current foal is a little filly by leading colonial sire Flying Spur.
3 - UNNAMED

From the Tommy Smith bred top liner Light up the World, the
bay colt is yet to be seen at the racetrack. Connections are yet to either trial or race
the youngster who was the third top priced horse of the sale. In fact taking out the
Sunday Silence yearlings and he was the most expensive at the Gold Coast earlier this
year.
4 - DANROAD (NZ)

The colt is certainly yet to set the world on fire in his two
early runs in New Zealand, where he is now in the Cambridge stables of Colin McNab. Rob
McAnulty, who purchased the colt and part owns him still, has a good record or buying good
horses from the Gold Coast (San Luis and St Covet spring to mind). The colt is sure to
improve with racing. In his most recent start he lined up against the best New Zealand has
to offer to date in the Wellesley Stakes and wasn't totally disgraced, although he was
again unplaced.
5 - CUPHILL

One of three expensive purchases for a strong Gerald Ryan
client, Cuphill is from the very good former racemare Loving Cup (she was a dual stakes
winner who ran third in a Golden Slipper). The filly is yet to be seen in public and has
not trialled or raced as yet. The mare's following youngster a bay filly will be offered
as lot number 72 at this year's Gold Coast sale.
6 - JOLLY GAINS

This Danehill colt has been named Jolly Gains and has headed
over the Hong Kong where he has been gelded and joined the Wong stable. The Strawberry
Road mare Wheatland Lady missed to Danehill before producing a brown filly by Thunder
Gulch on August 28 this year. Wheatland Lady is owned by John Singleton and is sure to be
sold on the Gold Coast in just over a year's time.
7 - MARDI GRAS

this attractive brown filly by Desert King was named Mardi Gras. Owned in the same
interests as Cuphill (see above), this filly is a member of Gerald Ryan's powerful Gold
Coast stable. The mare isn't represented at this year's sale series after missing to
Desert King. She has since moved to Victoria where she just produced a Swamp King colt.
8 - CASSIS

This filly by the king of Australian breeding Danehill will
race in the Arrowfield Stud colours. Not yet seen in public she has joined the Flemington
stables of trans-Tasman trainer Michael Moroney. The mare's next foal an End Sweep filly
is being offered as lot number 209 at the Gold Coast. Since then she has joined the
Strawberry Hill Stud band of broodmares and has just produced a Flying Spur colt.

agent for a Hong Kong client. The owners of the Irish bred mare have had no recent luck
with Sequenza at stud. In 2000 her Danehill foal was born dead and the following season
she again missed to the champion Coolmore based stallion.
10 - ANABATIK

at the Magic Millions sale in Adelaide in February. Key Satellite has since produced a
colt by Dr Fong.

Sudurka has recently joined the Randwick stables of former top jockey and current day
trainer Ron Quinton. Owned by the D'Arcy Thoroughbreds Syndicate, she is yet to be seen in
an official barrier trial or race. My Sparkling Star has a current yearling by Perugino, a
full sister to Sudurka, which is set to be retained by breeder Barry Taylor. The mare's
latest foal is a chestnut colt by the former champion galloper Peintre Celebre.
13 - ABLE CHOICE

herself, has since produced a Polish Navy filly which will be sold at Sydney this Easter.
Her current foal is a Real Quiet filly.

15 - SILENT ENCOUNTER

Silent Encounter joined the Lindsay Park stables of Tony
McEvoy and at his only start to date he finished eighth at Victoria Park in Adelaide.
Interesting to note that he was only beaten by three and a half lengths down the straight
(after being very green during the race) and he beat home the subsequent city winner
Crystallion. His full brother is being offered at lot 222 at Gold Coast in a couple of
weeks time. Queen of Show has since had a colt by Redoute's Choice.
16 - SUN KISSES

Sun Kisses won two trials over 300 metres and 900 metres
before recently stepping out in Brisbane where she scored an impressive win. Although only
winning by a neck the filly was cuddled most of the way by Cahill and the race was run in
record time. After sitting handy throughout Sun Kisses soon burst to the front in the home
straight for a top win. She is likely to run in the Magic Millions Classic on Saturday
week on the Gold Coast, where she is trained.
17 - VAN CLEEF ARPELS

Not much is known about this Fuji Kiseki colt although we can
confirm he has been named Van Cleef Arpels and was puchased by Hong Kong interests in
January. Centaleigh a New Zealand stakes winner has a Zeditave filly (lot 530) at the 2001
sale. The mare has already produced the Group placegetter Centagon. In her most recent
season Centaleigh missed to the former brilliant racehorse Fasliyev.
18 - DANESTY

19 - TOAST OF THE COAST

to Brief Embrace. After running fifth to the boom Melbourne filly Innovation Girl, Toast
of the Coast then ventured to Moonee Valley where she was a luckless second to Coupe. Solo
Show has since missed to Gilded Time before producing a filly by Danehill's Australian
Group One winner Redoute's Choice.
20 - AQUADANE

Aquadane's mare has her current yearling, a colt by Woodman, catalogued as lot number 256
at the 2002 Gold Coast sale. Following that colt the mare sadly died while in foal to the
promising young shuttler Langfuhr.
