Since its acquisition by three of the most talked about characters
in the industry the Magic Millions Sales company has moved from a celebrated company to an
innovative and internationally renowned bloodstock company.
Its three
proprietors, Gerry Harvey, John Singleton and Rob Ferguson are famous for their astute and
vivacious business demeanour, and have strong links to the industry. Their passion is ever
apparent in the investments they have made, from yearlings to racehorses and superb stud
farms.
The network
of operations at Magic Millions Sales Pty Limited has grown in the last six years from an
entire staff of only thirteen people based at the Gold Coast office. To a staff of over
30, with twenty-one based at the Gold Coast in Queensland, four in Adelaide South
Australia, three at Perth in Western Australia. In addition to the main offices there are
three consultants based in Melbourne, New Zealand and Perth.
Magic
Millions provides a host of services in addition to its flagship sale the Conrad Jupiters
Magic Millions 2002 Yearling Sale. Magic Millions runs public auctions at any approved
location, dispersal sales, and private sales for both vendors and buyers. To compliment
the sales side of the business, Magic Millions provides bloodstock valuations,
consultancy, insurance, catalogue style pedigrees, stallion shares and nominations, the
purchase and importation of stallions, venue hire, accommodation and flights.
The growth of
the Magic Millions network of operations throughout this period has seen it firmly
establish a leading role in the Australian Thoroughbred Industry, as well as becoming an
internationally repected company.
Recent
changes to Bloodstock and Marketing at the Gold Coast Head Office have seen the
acquisition of former Eliza Park Office Manager Anna Hudson from Victoria, now in the role
of Bloodstock Secretary. Prior to Anna working for Eliza Park for the last four years, she
spent a season working at Rathbarry Stud in Ireland, and gained other industry related
experience in Victoria.
Marketing now
has Annie McDonald in the role of Marketing & Advertising Supervisor. Annie began as a
Pedigree Writer for the former Dalgety Bloodstock International in Melbourne, gained a
degree in Journalism/Marketing. She gained experience in Marketing and Public Relations,
and has recently returned from working for Derrinstown Stud in Ireland, and travelling
Europe.
The Adelaide
and Perth offices of Magic Millions Sales were aquired in 1999, the Adelaide branch being
the former ABCOS Sales, and Perth the former Goodwood Bloodstock.
The Adelaide
branch is directed by General Manager Mr Rob Monsma, a racing stalwart with a lifetime of
experience in the Australian thoroughbred industry. Under Mr Monsmas leadership the
Adelaide Select Yearling Sale has received a well needed boost of confidence. Last year
the Adelaide Select Yearling Sale recorded the best sales figures of its history, becoming
the third biggest yearling sale in Australia behind the Magic Millions in January and the
Easter sale.
The Perth
branch has the enthusiastic leadership of General Manager Mr Grant Burns. A young and
driving force behind the attraction of a large contingency of Malaysian and Singaporean
buyers to the Perth Premier Yearling sales. Mr Burns is confident the great exporting
opportunities available due to the location of the West Australian branch, and the
performance of its sale graduates in the Asian region will only increase its popularity to
buyers and sellers alike.
Melbourne
based auctioneer and bloodstock agent for Magic Millions, Mr Simon Vivian has a long and
successful association with the Australian thoroughbred industry. From his base in
Melbourne he selects horses for the Magic Millions sales and provides all consultancy
services to the Victorian industry. Simon is regarded as one of Australias best
bloodstock auctioneers and sells at all Magic Millions major sales.
New Zealand
based auctioneer and bloodstock agent, Mr Steve Davis sold at his first Magic Millions
Sale in January 1997, and has done so every year since. Mr Davis has a host of experience
in the industry with the former Wrightson Bloodstock (New Zealand, Melbourne, Sydney),
South African National Sales, and Keenland, Kentucky USA on his resume. Steve Davis is a
presenter for Trackside, the NZ equivalent to Sky Racing, and covered the Dubai World Cup
in Dubai this year. His role for Magic Millions in New Zealand is to provide all
consultancy services to the Industry, and select horses for the Magic Millions Sales.
Perth based
Magic Millions consultant, Mr Murray Tillett is a much experienced and well respected
agent who has established over the years extensive clientele in the Singapore/Malaysian
regions. In particular, Mr Tillett was formerly with Goodwood Bloodstock before the sale
of that company to Magic Millions.
In 2002,
Magic Millions will be conducting sales in the following locations; Gold Coast, Adelaide,
Perth, Melbourne, Tamworth in NSW and Townsville in North Queensland.
The combined
expertise, knowledge and experience of the Magic millions staff is a great asset to this
progressive and innovative thoroughbred sales company.
In a six year
period, the turnover for the company has increased by nearly 300 percent. Essential to
this factor is the increase in catalogue numbers doubling from 458 lots catalogued in the
1995 Magic Millions Yearling Sale, to 911 lots catalogued in the 2001 Conrad Jupiters
Magic Millions Yearling Sale. A further increase is being seen in the cataloguing for the
2002 Yearling Sale.
It is
interesting to note that lots catalogued for this sale have increased, even though the
selection criteria is now a lot stricter than in the past. Reflecting the growing strength
of the flagship Magic Millions Sale.

will be held over five days of selling starting at 6pm on Thursday, 10th
January with Session I of the Major sale. Session II gets underway at 11am on Friday, 11th
