Almost 12 months to the day honest mare Sylvaner scored
again at Morphettville in the $150,000 Group 2 Marsh Classic (1600m).
This time last year, Sylvaner backed up after failing in
the Group 1 Australian Oaks behind Tempest Morn to win the Listed Stuart Crystal Stakes
(1600m).
12 months down the track, the same winning rider Brett
Prebble stole the race with a well timed run.
Prebble let the mare slide to the lead mid-race before
stacking the field up. He then shook her up and stole a break after straightening, just
holding on beat the fast-finishing Tyrolean.
"Shes a very honest mare and Brett rode her a
treat to win," trainer Barry James said.
"Her run in the Matron Stakes last start at Flemington
was better than it looked and she was really underdone. This is the race she was set
for."
James, a committeeman at the Ballarat Jockey Club, will now
aim the mare at the $50,000 Listed Brock Partners Classic (2000m) at Morphettville on Cup
day.
