Improving New Zealand stayer Our Kazz also stepped up to a stakes win in style
after a masterful Damien Oliver ride in the $100,000 Listed Turfgrass Adelaide Port
Adelaide Guineas.
Young trainer Craig Ritchie was worried Our
Kazz wouldnt have enough pace to stay with his opposition over the 1800m but Oliver
assured him there would be enough speed in the race.
Oliver settled the gelding well back in the
field but came with a barnstorming run to win easily and smash the track record set in
1991 by Shivano Miss.
"They went really hard up front and
set it up for him," Oliver said.
"He settled nicely and really let down
well. He would have won by further but he pulled up a bit when he hit the front. Hes
definitely a better chaser."
Ritchie, who attributed the win to
Olivers ride, said the gelding would improve over more ground.
"He was ready to win today but will
keep going as the distances get longer," Ritchie said.
"He finished a close fourth in the New
Zealand Derby behind Leica Guv and thats pretty good form. Hell run in the
Veuve Clicquot next start then the Derby."
Craigs father, legendary Kiwi trainer
Frank, prepared Showella to win the Listed Veuve Clicquot Stakes in 1999. She then went on
then went on to win the SA Derby.
"The trip to Adelaide really made
Showella so, hopefully, he can do the same," Ritchie said.
Local gallopers filled the minor placings
with Squillani battling on well to finish second, while Pray In Vain finished third.
The well-supported favourite, the Colin
Alderson-trained Hillsgrove, was never in the race early but charged home late to finish
seventh. |
