Danzig
stallion Belong To Me (USA) opened his southern hemisphere stakes account courtesy of
exciting filly Before Too Long, who captured the Listed Keith Mackay Handicap (1200m) at
Randwick on Saturday. The Gary Portelli-trained filly
bowled along in the lead and kicked clear over the rise to put 2-3/4 lengths on Verstak
(Danehill) with Cirque Du Soleil (Danehill) a further length away third.
Sent out as 2-1 favourite after her impressive effort,
setting the pace before being collared to finish 3-1/4 lengths from Calaway Gal in the
$2.5 million Golden Slipper at Rosehill a fortnight ago, Before Too Long recorded her
second win in five attempts.
She is a half-sister to stakes winner Okanui and trainer
Gary Portelli intends to send Before Too Long to the paddock with a view to contesting the
feature fillies races in spring.
Before Too Long was a $40,000 purchase at Melbourne's
William Inglis Premier sale.
Belong To Me, whose oldest Australian progeny are
two-year-olds, has now had four individual Australian winners including Czar of Prussia,
Mybelle and Proprietor, while Longing For You, Belong To Madam and Exclusive Appeal have
placed.
"Belong To Me rested at Lane's End Farm for the
southern hemisphere season of 1999, hence he did not have a yearling draft for 2002,"
said Widden Stud's Antony Thompson.
"But he returned in 2000 and 2001 to cover great books
of mares at Widden, and breeders have reacted positively to news that he is returning to
Widden in 2002," he said.
"The fact he has recorded a stakes winner from his
first southern hemisphere crop indicates that Belong To Me is poised to continue the
success here that he has had in North America," Thompson said. |
