I'm still deciding what dressage saddle to get, I'm looking at Peter Horobin's saddles, Anky and now the Bates Isabell. Does anyone have one, any help would be great

Tried them. Hate them. I find it really pushes my upper body forward and I end up sitting completely off centre. Howver, other people find them great. I would try one before buying it, just to seel if you find it comfortable or not. Personally, I love the old caprillis. Best saddle I have ever ridden in.

I can comment on the Anky saddle, it doesn't suit me, I found it to be very narrow in the twist and the seat put a lot of pressure on my tail bone. For some reason it seemed to encourage me to pinch with my knees. So if you don't like a narrow twist saddle then you probably won't like the Anky. I think the Isabel is OK, I must be one of the few people in the world to feel indifferent about them! I love how PH saddles are made, and how they look, however I had a Grande which I didn't really like. Haven't tried an Amazone but they sound great, I prefer a wider twist saddle & the Amazone has that soft cut out bit. I have a Barnsby AVG & highly recommend them to people who like a wider twist, deep seat & big knee rolls.
Enjoy saddle searching, it's fun! As mentioned above make sure you try riding in it first, as they can feel great in the store & totally unsuitable when riding.

Yeah the debate over Isabell's on here seems to be a bit like the "to rug or not to rug" issue.
Personally, I love my Isabell, although I opted for the Wintec version. Definitly try before you buy though, same with any saddle.

I have ridden in the Anky and the Isabell and would not purchase either. The Anky just did not suit by body shape or something, I was terribly uncomfortable the whole time I was riding in it, felt like riding in a bucket rather than a saddle and no real connection to the horses back. The Isabel was very comfortable but put me in a very false ineffective position, I leant forwards, stuck my bum out and my lower leg slid back WAY behind the correct shoulder-hip-heel line. I am quite tall however and it may suit shorter riders. I have not had any experience with Peter Horobin saddles. I can really recommend a Prestige saddle for a good fitting saddle that is very good for your seat. Otherwise the Old Bates saddles such as Prix St George and Maestro are not too bad.

I have 5 saddles, and i bought the wintec isabell when it was on special a while back. It felt good in the shop but I find that on the horse it really locks you into a position, good or bad. What is it with new saddles these days, that new Bates that everyone is riding in , with the huge knee pads is the same, in fact it is the worse one for locking you into position
Many people use stock saddles for breaking in for the extra security, but i felt like with the Isabel , the horse could turn itself inside out and I would still be sitting in that nice position
My favourite would have to be the county, extremely comfortable, and lets you find your own seat and position
i have one dicky leg, which I thought the isabell might help to keep in position instead of sliding back like it does, but found I just got stiffer instead At least these days you can try them out at home, because they really do feed different in the shop

I have an Isabell and I like the way it holds you in when you are riding the young horses, you don't move when they decide they're out of here. The stirrup bars are set further back that's why people feel that their legs are back further and they tip forward. I don't feel this although with my dicky hips the wider seat gives me pain.I an only ride in it without the knee rolls. Horses for courses really. You need to try a few saddles a couple of times to see if you like it. I had a KN symphony and loved it, the county is also good for the finer type of horse.

I AM TRYING ONE NOW AND I LOVE IT!!!
The only problem is that its 2nd hand and the gullet is too wide. I would like to try it with a narrower gullet but that would mean buying one and then if the saddle still doesn't work then i have a gullet with no use...
gnar...
anyway, i love the saddle it is comfortable (everyone says that it warps your position but it didn't change mine at all so either i have an awesome or a really c*ap position) and Bobby went so soft and round and beautiful while riding him in it our dressage scores would have rocketed. I would love to get one, though it may not be the one i am trying now as i may need to get a saddle fitter to fit a new one to Bobby...

The Isabell WILL make you lean forward. They force you into a false position by pushing your legs back. If people just learnt to sit correctly and balanced they wouldnt need these orthopaedic looking saddles! Sorry if I offend anyone but the Innova fits into this catagorie too. I am a kieffer girl but know plenty of people with bates caprillis and they seem great too. The Horobins re well made and the amazone looks like a great saddle.

Well I probably fit into a catagory that needs an "orthopaedic" saddle due to back probs. I find that I ride with very strong lower leg contact for both stability & control. Am about to try a Prestige Top Dressage saddle in th near future. Any comments? Was recommended by saddlery as probably the saddle I need for my probs. At the moment I am 'swimming' in my Bates Maestro which I really loved 15kgs ago so have been riding in my stock (fender) saddle but it is a little 'loose' now too I've noticed. Is very hard to try saddles where we live. Particularly as at the moment the saddleries can't afford to carry them in stock so they have to be specially ordered. Interesting all the comments re the Isabells. A friend of mine ahd one & she had probs with it too.

I love mine. Mine has Cair... It fits all of my horses well. I admit that those leg pads are not my favourite, so I took mine out, it gives me a lot more contact now. I got the non leather, so it can get rained on, I use mine for everyday use.
For shows I have other ones, which are more contact.

lean forward, do you think, could be factors why someone feels like they are leaning forward, ie not fitted to the horse correctly
I love my Isabella so comfy, I rode in the Innova but it didn't suit my hips. Best to try before you buy, not all saddles suit everyone

I have an Isobel which has been a great saddle. It doesn't fit my newest horse though. She is very narrow in the back and even with the ability to change gullets, it rocks on her back. Fits my other horse perfectly, which is most frustrating. I am now having to buy a new saddle....Hopefully one which fits both horses.
If anyone is interested my Isobel is for sale... 17" smooth brown leather, Cair, matching stitched stirrup leathers, knife edge stirrups and the whole kit of all the sizes of gullets.... I thought if I had them all it would be able to fit any horse. Seemed like a good idea at the time (about 3 years ago).... Oh well, it has been a lovely saddle and I've enjoyed it. I'm not sure how much it would be worth, I'm thinking maybe about $1800. If anyone is interested feel free to pm me. I would be happy to make it available for any CHers wishing to try it out. If I've got the price wrong, I'd appreciate some feedback too.

Wembury have you any idea of what saddle you will try next.
My saddle doesn't fit my second horse and I am currently looking at buying a second saddle. I did try to make my saddle fit her but it gives her dry spots on her wither.
I don't really want the expense of another saddle and then the decision of what to get. I do like the Anky Salinero but I don't know I can't make up my mind.

Not sure if anything I can tell you is at all helpful with your search, but it's early morning and I'm reading people's opinions on all these different brands of saddles, so thought I'd just type this anyway:
When we first decided to bring saddles across from Germany we read up on a lot of different makers' saddles before deciding which ones we wanted to bring over, and ended up only deciding to bring Hennigs, Benzs and Hoepfners, which are all primarily custom made brands and are all really top end. We've had a few Hennigs and Benzs come across already and although I always figured I'd love the Benzs most personally (I'd read nothing but rave revues about them and everyone seems to especially love the 'feel' they get from their monoflap design) I actually feel more at home in the Hennigs at the moment.
They're both terrific saddles though and both feel great to ride in, but just very different from each other. Our first Hoepfner landed yesterday and is about to spend a month in quarantine before it gets here, so it'll be interesting to have a ride in that when it arrives because whereas with the Hennigs and Benzs you can actually 'see' the inovative design before you even sit in them, the Hoepfners 'look' pretty similar to most other saddles. But I've read reviews from quite a lot of people who prefer the Hoepfner of the three and these days they're priced almost the same as Benz and Hennig so they've obviously got to be pretty special too.
I always owned Bates/Wintec and County saddles before we bought these ones across and I was so keen on my gorgeous old Countys that I actually managed to 'wear out' three of them completely. I'd use my Wintec Pro for breaking in and for longing without stirrups but would use my County for everything else and I would be lucky to get a few years out of my Countys at the time, although to be fair I was riding a lot of horses every day in them. I'd ridden in Kieffers and Stubbens when I was working at Koombahla but neither of them really grabbed me, they just didn't feel as comfortable to me as the Bates/Wintecs/Countys and I found the Countys put me in a more natural position.
My favorite saddle I've ridden in so far though is my 12yo Hennig. It came across from the US and the lady who owned it before me used it for trail riding for years, so it's 'very' broken in and comfortable, and I just love it to pieces.

Hey, I ve just bought a isabell wintec and love it!!. It puts you in the CORRECT position with the legs back behind the girth. But each to there own. Not a saddle for everyone. It killed my legs for a while, (not used to being so far back) but now it's great. Fits my horse great too. Defo try before you buy. Make sure you get a proper saddle fitter too. I got one from Horseland.(they do an intense course...all in one day probably) No good, only in it for the $$. "Fitted" my horse a thro with a high wither and then my friends horse a very solid warmblood and apparantly both only needed the medium gullet. Dont really know about that!! Bit odd to me. But before everyone gets on my back, they might be different in different states. Try and find an actual saddle maker (yes there around)It might be hard but it would be worth it. Good luck

I hate Bates/Wintec saddles, particularly the Isabel. They hurt me to ride in, and I feel trapped- I like being able to find my own position rather than being locked in.
I love Kieffers, but can't comment on the Anky as I haven't ever ridden in one. I'm unfortunately having to sell mine (Wein) as it doesn't fit my horse, but if I could keep it I absolutely would as I LOVE it.
I also really like Crosbys, they are good for giving you a nice position without locking you in.

Hi there im only a newbie but thought i would comment as i have tried so many saddle in the last 6mths its not even funny!!
I brought a Don Stuart higly reccommend they are a wonderful saddle with a beautiful deep seat I also used to hate the isabells but i have tried both the wintec & the leather in the last week & i absolutly loved them i think they are best suited to a Heavier framed horse as my first ride was in my Aarb who is very fine & it felt horrible felt i was rising to far forward ect but then tried them on my TB who is a heavier frame & they were fantastic put in me in a beautiful position & close contact

Hello there
I have the Wintec Isabell. I hated it at first and it gave me a groin injury that lasted for 9 mths (now completely recovered). It does push you forward and push your legs back. I think its designed for people with very long legs so the longer your legs are the better off you will be. I would not recommend it for people with short legs. I really enjoy it now, its extremely comfortable. Good luck, definintely ride in one for at least a month. Cheers

It really depends on what is most comfortable for your horse first, then what suits you. Having said that, I'm not crazy about Bates saddles but I have worked in an Isabel and I did really like it. Very comfortable. I currently own a Keiffer Wien and love it.

Hi
to the above poster who said that they are suited for long legged people.
I think you are wrong, as far as I know they are designed for the shorter people, as it was designed with Isabell Werth and she is short! But not specifically of course, perhaps just better suited to shorter people.

GET A PH!!!!
Personally I absolutely hate the isabell and innova! - If you want to develop a TRUE independant deep saet do not go near this saddle. It will restrict you from developing a real "feel" for a horse.
This is due to the rediculously deep seat, huge knee blocks and set back stirrup bars which have all been placed in the saddle to give more novice riders a feeling of security.. In turn it locks you in!

I'm short (163cmish) and had the same problems with my Isabell in terms of being tipped forward and legs too far back. It was extremely comfy however and fit my horse well.
I've just replaced it with a Prestige Doge, which I am stoked with

I'm approx 5'7" and love my Isabel. However it's a 16.5" so probably a bit too small in the seat.
I feel locked in if I wear sticky bums on the Wintec version, but with a green horse I don't mind that so much
I am about to try Kieffer's (Kur and Innsbruck) but if neither of those fit I will be going to a leather Isabel. I thought I was relying on the saddle far too much after getting out of the Isabel and into my Maestro, but after riding in Counties and a tiny 15.5" show saddle with no issues, I realised my problem is the Maestro (doesn't suit me) not that the Isabel had taught me to rely too much on the security of it.
In saying that, I don't have big knee rolls in mine, I have none! They are removeable. Might put them in tonight to see whether I have a different opinion of it all together then....!

I have had several Isabells and I really like them. I tried the Cair but it was a disaster - but went back to a flocked saddle, no problems.
I can't get them to fit every horse though - they do better on low withered horses. I find large withered horses, no matter what gullet or what configuration, they just don't fit.
We're about to release a new saddle into Australia - it's the Keiffer Lusitano. Now, don't be fooled by the name, it's the most amazing saddle to ride big moving horses in. I've ridden for several people in Germany who will only ride in these because they are just fantastic. They're not sold here though because the distributors think that the name will put people off. The Kur though is actually the Lusitano Kur but it's just not the same as the real thing to ride in. The pure Lusitano model is just so much better.... I'm hoping we'll have our demo model in by DWTS if you're going. Cheers Shahron
